I've used State Farm since I started driving (my wife was with them when we got married). I now have most of my insurance policies with them so I get various discounts. Their service has been excellent and the price is better than most of the other companies out there, at least for me.

@lavikinga: +1 on the USAA. I've used them for years, and they are especially good if you live/travel a lot overseas.

Never had any problems, and the best rate-to-coverage costs I have come across.

vote-for7vote-against

I was with Geico for a few years until they continued to increase our insurance rates. When I called Geico and asked why my rates were increasing they told me that costs are going up everywhere. IMHO my rates should have gone down not up, never been in an accident, nor any tickets.

I Looked around and found in our area that State Farm was by far the cheapest and we added a few other things to our auto insurance and saved even more. State Farm saved me 30% (none of this 15%) with better coverage.

I guess it really depends on where you live and what you need for insurance.

@75grandville: Insurers do a soft-hit credit check only. My understanding is that it would take a dozen or more of these type checks to have any impact on your credit score.

Progressive has been pretty good to us so far. Our rates have gone up, but that's because I got a speeding ticket. :( Claims service was fast and friendly when one of our vehicles fell victim to a hail storm. I don't have much bad to say about them, they've always been able to assist when I needed someone to help with any policy questions.

Geico...it really did save me 15% or more on my car insurance. Really.

Another +1 on USAA, great company.

AAA. Had State Farm, and upon an apples to apples comparison, then saved me $1000 a year (auto & home owners combined). Prior to that I had AllState, and my agent said, "honestly, if you want your rate lowered, you're going to have to leave AllState then come back."

vote-for4vote-against

@mellielou: Me too, regarding Allstate. When I finally said "enough's enough" is when, after my local agent had moved their office THREE times, I decided to check out another Allstate agent. I walked into the office and saw empty desks, no ppl. Someone wandered through and casually told me that they're having a staff meeting but it should be over in about 10 minutes. I couldn't believe my ears. Their staff meetings were more important than their clients (and, yes, this was within regular posted hours). I told her forget it, that she had just told me all I needed to know, and left. Ended up w/ AAA.

State Farm. Been with them for years and they're great.

Geico? I had insurance with them once. For a week. They cancelled on me based on my wife's record, which I disclosed to them when they quoted the policy. That's when I went to SF and haven't looked back.

Combining auto and homeowners insurance policies gives me a break on both that makes it hard for others to compete.

I've been a customer of Amica Mutual for 18 years. I highly recommend them.

@wnyx585am: Good to know.

I'm in a situation where I'm particularly sensitive about any impact on my credit score, so I thought I'd throw it out there.

vote-for3vote-against

We have State Farm on our house, and vehicles. They have been pretty good

vote-for3vote-against

@lavikinga: I have heard what a great company that is from so many folks. I don't qualify, or I would be there in a flash. I was an AMICA customer - still am - for 35 years. They have served me well, but they have changed a lot over time.

vote-for3vote-against

I've been a USAA member for close to 40 years and would definitely recommend it to anyone who qualifies.

vote-for3vote-against

Used GEICO for 38 years but finally got tired of rationalizing that their great service made their higher price worthwhile. Compared rates, changed to Progressive, and got even better customer service. Have been a happy Progressive customer for several years now.

vote-for3vote-against

p.s. - with Erie though, you have to have a spotless record to get their insanely low rates. They also have outstanding homeowner's policies - when we closed on our house, the title clerk said that he had rarely seen a rate that low on a new home policy.

Have been with Geico for the last 14 years. Was with State Farm, they raised rates, called Geico, saved 33%. Sounds like their ad, I know. But now you know it really does happen ($600/6 mos. -> $400/6 mos.).

A friend had recommended them. I've unfortunately had to use them several times over the last 18 months, and the customer service has been great. They forgave an at fault accident several years ago. Can't say enough good about them. I recommend that you check them out. My experience is also based on a disgustingly clean driving record. Your experience may vary.

My parents just switched from SF (after 30+ years) to USAA. Not enough info to say more, but apparently the rates were much better. SF has always had good service - just a matter of $.

One warning - if you are comparison shopping, I think that many insurers will do a "hard" credit pull, which can have a slight negative effect on your credit score. Multiple pulls can have a larger impact. Just a word of caution.

Mercury Insurance. Not as well known, but a good company. Also have had great experience with Travelers. I use an independent insurance agency.

vote-for2vote-against

I'm still with my parents, but they are through a local-ish (tri-state, I think?) insurer. Supposedly better rates than any national provider

In addition to State Farm and all of them, local ones are definitely worth the investigation. Can get the same coverage for less (that sounds like a commercial), or tell the major company "X is offering me this coverage for this amount" and maybe they'll try to beat the price to get your business

vote-for2vote-against

I've been with Erie for over 20 years . The service has always been good. I checked with the other major carriers a few years ago to see if I could score a better rate. I'm still with Erie. To get the same coverage from another carrier after this many years, my rates would go up.

vote-for2vote-against

Esurance gives me BY FAR the cheapest rates...no one can touch them!

vote-for2vote-against

Before I moved to a place where I couldn't get them I used Farm Bureau. they were good to me. now I am with State Farm. I made the mistake of using ESurance. NEVER AGAIN!

vote-for2vote-against

@lavikinga: We'd love to go with them, but we're not special enough.

vote-for2vote-against

I have Erie Insurance and love them - as a car salesman, I always recommended them to people purchasing new vehicles that were worried about the cost of insurance on the new car - often Erie Insurance's price quote for the new car was better than what people were paying on their old car

vote-for2vote-against

We've got AAA. Great company, unless you're in an accident with another driver (who is at fault, admits it to the CHP and everyone in hearing distance) who also has AAA.

Our policy replaced our car with enough money to upgrade to a later model (05 to 08), his policy, which was responsible for the injury portion, said "oh, you're not hurt bad" and squabbled over medical. Told me (in writing) I'd have been better off if I'd let him hit me instead of taking evasive action.

vote-for1vote-against

I have progressive. My family had been with AllState for 25 years. AllState said all they needed was my current address info to get my a policy. I got suspicious when it was funny they left out the price. Turns out they wanted to charge me $1100 per 6 months.

Got the exact same coverage from Progressive for $485. The AllState agent didn't even try when I finally got the quote, he actually apologized and said he would call me in a year when the a ticket is wiped from my record. (I'm under 25 and have a speeding ticket and a fender bender).

vote-for1vote-against

I have USAA and am not happy with them. I have also had a bad experience with Progressive as a claimant so I won't be going with them.
