Who's the retailer?

[edit] I found it
It is sold by Barnes and Noble so that makes it, in my opinion, the best place to opt for a refurb. Having a Refurb. Nook Color running CM7 myself... I would say definitely go for this.

@miquinn: Thanks for the post (regarding the retailer - my post stated "Barnes & Noble is selling on ebay..."). Anyway, I think with the 1 year warranty backed by B&N, it's a good unit, but is it good for gifting since it's a refurbished product?

@mscalbear: Yeah sorry I have a habit of not thoroughly reading everything :D But regarding the gifting. Mine was easy enough to take out of the package without really noticing it had been opened since the box is not like usual cardboard. There might be a plastic sheet around it but if you take it off it looks new without it. So what I'm saying is if you are worried at all about what the refurb. might be like then you could take it out, turn it on... take it for a quick spin :D ... make sure all is well, put it back in the awesome box and wrap it and it won't look like you opened it at all. (you could even charge it for them so it'll be nice and ready to go when the open it...) ok hope this helps c:

one more thing: are you planning on rooting it so it becomes a android tablet? sounds like you are not but just wondering

i would but i'd try to disguise the refurbished angle. i remember a while ago woot was selling a refurb mp3 player and the comments were all asking a similar question. "does it say refurb anywhere?". turned out the refurb item had a very tough sticker on the back that said "refurb". others started posting tips on taking the sticker off since it was very difficult.

I wouldn't (and don't) think twice about giving a refurb from a reputable company. In my experience, new items are just as apt to break, whereas refurbs have been broken in :)

I purchased a refurb iPad from Apple for my girlfriend's birthday earlier this year. It came with a new warranty (ie. one year). It was packaged like new and looked completely new when she opened it.

I also purchased a refurb Nook Color earlier this year (though I haven't given it away). It also came with a new warranty and was indistinguishable from a new one.

My feeling is that it mostly depends on who refurbed the item and what kind of warranty it comes with. Items refurbed by the manufacturer tend to be better in my experience and frequently come with new warranties. In this case, I'd say it is probably fine to give as gifts.

@miquinn: If the unit were for me, I'd try to root it. For gifting, I'd leave it to the recipient (especially if I manage to brick it!).

@wootgurl: LOL, I bought one of those mp3 players and was able to scrape off the refurb sticker. The Clip version unfortunately had the Refurb etched into the plastic backing, so no removal for that product.

@baqui63: Did your Nook Color have Refurb on the unit? With a one year B&N warranty, I'm not too worried about the quality. But I don't know, it's a little tacky to give a gift that has Refurb stamped on it, do you think?

I pulled the trigger and bought the B&N deal for the Nook color on ebay... I'll look it over and decide whether to gift it. Thanks for the opinions~

@mscalbear: yay hope it works out well!

I don't think twice about giving refurbs, and removing the sticker is just plain lying.
As long as it has a warranty(!), who cares?
But as far as rooting it, use the SD card method, giving it dual boot capabilities. No deleting files, instructions on YouTube. Win/win

@mscalbear:

No indication on the Nook itself that it was a refurb. The box has a "Certified Preowned Nook" sticker that probably could be removed without damaging the box (I just tried pulling it off and it pulled up the paper of the box but with some alcohol it might come off cleanly).

Given that the refurb Nook Colors (at least those from B&N) come with a new warranty, I don't see removing the sticker as a major thing. However, for other refurbs that have reduced warranties, I think hiding the refurb status is sleazy and uncool, especially on a gift.
