You should get something else... namely a pet turtle.

Sorry, but a pet turtle does not provide me with email access while I'm sitting in a dance studio waiting for my kids' classes. Plus it's more likely to get worms than an ipod is.

Ok, first things first: Don't discount the possibility of a pet turtle. Nothing you have stated precludes the possibility you could develop a long, meaningful companionship with it.

I'd stay with the ipod touch line, if I were you. The android options just aren't as established and reliable. The ipod line continues to be successful because it's reliable, backed by a company with a trust-worthy warranty, and so widely used, yet so without diversity, that the apps keep flying off the shelves and usually work. (By without diversity, I mean that the hardware is pretty consistent within generations. Compared to the plentiful variety offered with android software. Same hardware means easier to develop apps that work.)

You might as well stay with the touch if you've already invested in apps - jailbreak it if you're so inclined (I love my touch.) The apps are cheap & it pretty much just works.

Yes there are more powerful devices (mostly cell phones with dual core CPU/GPU -- and soon quad core.)

You might want to look at the psp2 when it comes out soon but you'll pay a lot more for games. It is probably the nearest non-phone competitor.

Oh yeah my touch has Worms(tm) already....you'd have to find 'em for the turtle.

@gregorylikescheapstu: Nah, I turtle-sat a turtle once when I was young. It turned out to have some maggots or worms or something, nasty. That put me off pet turtles for, well, forever. I'll just enjoy them in other people's tanks.

Have you looked at the Archos 43? It is the closest android device to what you want that I know of. Good reviews on Amazon.
