Get to Know Your Wooters
I've very much enjoyed the community we've built here and I want to learn a little bit about all of you. Not so much hopes and dreams (although list if you wish), but what your background is in, and what deals you look for/specialize in. Also, any deals you really wish for that someone might be able to find.
I'll start. I'm a grad student getting a degree in Biology in Boston, and my specialization is in deep-sea biology. Therefore, I would consider myself an expert at any science-related deals. I enjoy finding deals based around my hobbies of gaming, computers, diving, guitar, and running. My dream item is to find a nice acoustic/electric guitar for 200-400, a difficult task to be sure, but i'm not in a hurry.
Your turn!

Jeez, you want me to out myself, not sure how I feel about that, I like to think everyone thinks of me as a sadistic red cat who likes shiny things. Ah what the heck...
I'm a 2nd year student at Cal Poly Pomona working on his bachelor's in Aerospace Engineering. I love rockets and try to go regularly to the ROC meetings at the Lucerne Dry Lake Bed. My current project, named "Icarus", is a 6 foot rocket designed to break Mach 1. I'm also love to garden, specializing in carnivrous plants, particularly: Sarracenia, Drosera, Nepenthes, and Venus Fly Traps acclimated to live entirely outdoors.
I love the sparkly stuff, as you folk all know. My father taught me everything he knows and loves about jewelry, which I use here as well as what I acquired. I love working on computers and have fiddled with them since I was in kindergarten. I also love ceramics as well. There is nothing I'm really looking for. What I post is what I see or find that I like.
"Check out the big brains on @geode & @catbertthegreat!"
;)
I majored in physics in college, but that was a while ago. I now work as an analyst for a large company in RTP (Research Triangle Park) in NC. I play with Excel and Access all day dicing up data in different ways. I'm no programmer, but I use VBA a lot to make my life easier.
I've been married for 3.5 years and have a 15 month old daughter who - I'm being completely objective & unbiased when I say this - is the best human to have ever lived.
I still call myself a drummer even though I haven't played much in a while (babies take up a lot of time - who knew!?!). After my Dell desktop was stolen while my wife and I were moving into our house, I decided to build my own computer. (The door to our apartment was kicked in, sending the doorjam across the room. Thank goodness we weren't home.)
I'm on my 3rd computer build and enjoy tinkering around with it.
I also love cooking, good food and good wine.
I look for deals on tech, food, wine and gadgets related to all of those.
Well let's see.
I currently Live south of anotherhiggins on I-85. I am not that short, my username is a play off my family name and the books. For the record I am so NOT a huge Lord of the Rings fan. I like to read a lot though.
Originally, I am from the West Coast, the land of Floating bridges, lattes, perpetual traffic jams, rain and grunge music (okay all of the West Coast has traffic james). I have a BA in British History and a Masters in Education. I am a stereotypical Generation Xer, and I am currently on my 4th career. I actually started out in banking before I went back for my masters. I was a casualty of the first bank Merger of the early 90's. I now work in local government-my mom thinks my job is top secret because I refuse to tell her what I do. My passions are fashion, Europeans sports, photography, music, reading, my house, and politics.
Nice to meet you!
I am a recent college graduate from a Boston area university, with three B.S. in neuroscience, biology, and psychology. I am currently taking some time off from school, while working as a lab manager in a Drosophila genetics lab and redesigning some introductory biology curricula. I am studying like a madman for the MCAT, which I will be taking mid April.
Outside of academia, I love to read. I am also trying to feel my way through my first dslr, which I hope will eventually become a hobby (I refuse to consider it a hobby as of yet). I also hold a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Oh...and I love House, 24, and The Office.
I also earned my purple woot square today!
I eat nuts.
@jumbowoot: He means this literally. He has a big jar of nuts on his desk.
@thefenst: So are you implying he is a giant squirrel?
@hobbit: Well if he is, then the book on my shelf that shows how to skin and gut a squirrel might come in handy one day...
I work for Deals.Woot. I have been a Woot member since 2004. I have degrees in History & International Relations. I love finding good deals on pretty much anything. :)
@hobbit: Precisely.
Seems like fun
I'm married, 38 and live in Dallas with my wife and two sons. Our oldest, Ian, was born 2 weeks after launching a silly website that sells crap on the internet. Nate was born 10.5 months later so it was a very busy year. I started my first business (a computer parts distributor) at age 22 back in February 1994 after dropping out of college a bit earlier. I would claim I dropped out because of virtuous ambition, but it was truthfully because I stayed up all night for weeks playing dial-up BBS games and failed a full semester. Originally, my main hobby was assembling/tinkering with early pc hardware (hobbies end when you make them careers even briefly.) I like Mexican food, good classic rock (some alternative now), and shiner bock beer. I'm a dallas cowboys and dallas mavericks fan because I like to go to local games.
My boys are pictured incognito from a cameo appearance here: http://www.woot.com/forums/ViewPost.aspx?PostID=3537168&PageIndex=1&ReplyCount=20#post3543528
@snapster: "I'm a dallas cowboys and dallas mavericks fan because I like to go to local games." That's easy.....
But who did you root for in the NCAA Baseball super regionals last year - UT or TCU?
I'm a 19-year-old, first-year sophomore at the University of Texas at Austin earning my B.S. in mechanical engineering, and maybe a teaching certification (we'll see how things go and if the university hurries up and makes the program for engineers). Although I go to school in Austin, I live in the Houston area. I'm the youngest of three (unless you count my dog's [a lab I so greatly love] age in people-years). Although I live in the Houston area, I was born across the pond in England. I've been accused of being a bibliophile and making too many obscure references that few people understand. I "work" as not only a full-time student but also as a part-time/whenever-I-want programmer for various professors.
If I were stranded on a desert island, my three albums would be: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Beatles), A Night at the Opera (Queen), Who's Next (The Who)
Looking for an item? Uhh ... currently: a (piano) keyboard (unless I can steal my brother's) or a messenger bag.
@gratzy: For messenger bags, I LOVE Timbuk2(timbuk2.com). There are some pretty good deals for them if you really want some of their bags. Any specifics, like model, size, color scheme, and I may be able to get a good deal. I know I got mine(the Commute) for about a third off, I think.
Oh why not.. I am a 27 year old 911 dispatcher in northern california, which is what I have been doing to pay the bills for the past 5 years. Before that I was an infantryman in the united states army doing time with 1/503rd in the 2nd infantry division and, more affectionately, with 2/187 in the 101st Airborne division. What draws me to deals.woot? no clue, but i love it. I love being able to help people out, and i thoroughly enjoy the conversation with you all. i think i am more successful in the "fun" genre if there ever was such a thing, also branching out into the home improvement & dog fields ( i have a 120 lb american bulldog named brutus. i have a lot of time in front of a computer and deals.woot helps me stay sane!!
besides, i heart free things
I'm not sure what to say here. I am a polymath, and am constantly looking for things that are new and interesting. As I've said before, I'm retired, and spend the spring, summer, and fall, outside, gardening. I don't really need anything, but I enjoy the #challenge posts more than anything.
I am fascinated with things mathematical, and currently am interested in all the cloud stuffs; Amazon, Canonical/Ubuntu, Rackspace, Google, and even Microsoft.
I came for the beta, and because new things are good, but stayed for the entertainments and companionship.
Thank you to Deals for providing me fun during the winter months.
[edit] I almost forgot. My favorite thing mathematically is paired primes.
I'm just your average 24-year-old gal who loves to shop. Average ends where everything else begins: I majored in Computer Science in college where I was one of two females in the program during the 7 years I witnessed it (my own 4 years, and the Soph-Srs my Freshman year).
By day I work at a bank doing IT asset management: hardware and software compliance, tracking, reporting, etc. By night I tend bar, which started out as "for the fun of it," but is becoming increasingly hazardous to my free time. By weekend I Ski Patrol, which not many people know is purely volunteer. All in all ~65 hours/week are spoken for by these three commitments. I'm running out of characters (and free time) to include hobbies.
I like deals on anything, and I especially like challenges. It's just nice to share a good bargain with others. I'm a member of multiple deal/coupon sites. If I could figure out how to make money saving others' money, I'd be on it like stink on a pig.
I think Woot is genius.
My turn! I'm 24, accountant, en route to getting my CPA license. Live in NJ, have since '96, moved here from a town outside Boston. Played football and basketball in high school.
Currently interested in sports (most anything, excited for opening day) - Jets and Yankees fan. Knicks fan too, but I'm not sure they still exist... I think my old HS team may be playing at MSG these days. LeBron 2010! Also enjoy motorcycling (for all of the 3 week riding season in NJ), tech of most sorts. Closing on my first house at the end of the week, so I cruise deals.woot all the time to try and find cool and useful stuff for cheap.
Not sure if you guys want to know about a newer member, but here goes!
I'm a 33 year old junior at Boise State University. I am studying to become a psychotherapist, so I have a few years left. ;) Before I went back to school I was a Radio DJ for almost 7 years. I have lived all over the US... I have played the guitar for around 15 years, I love to cook, and because of that I love to exercise. I love all things outdoors, and if you've never been here, Boise is on of the most beautiful and friendly places on earth. I just moved here from near Chicago in July, and I'm never going back to the unfriendly Midwest. If you want to know anything else about me, you can look me up on facebook! www.facebook.com/claudicina :)
I'm a Cancer. I enjoy long walks on the beach at sunset. I'm just trying to find that special someone who makes me smile and will stay up with me for three days straight during a Woot-off.
For 18 years I was an Army brat, roaming the world, then I spent 20 years of my own in the Army roaming the world. I have lived near the Atlantic Ocean for 20 years, longer than I have ever lived anywhere. Somedays that makes me happy, somedays, not. It took me 7 years of night school and 4 duty stations to get my undergraduate degree in business. Ten years later I got to go full time to get my MBA (great fun at ECU!) I spend some of my time teaching little old ladies to use a computer for email and internet so they can stay in touch with their grandchildren. I help a cousin at a garden center which is really nice. I do some volunteer work, and I spend a bunch of time looking at maps of where I would like to go visit. My spouse does not like to travel, so I spend even more time on the computer. Deals.woot is the first site I have found where I actually want to talk to the other wooters. I am back everyday to see what's happening. Who'da thunk it?
@fidett: Ha! You might work down the hall from me. There are two drosophila labs in my building! I'm at a Cambridge school, but i don't like to name drop. If you know the area, I work in the Biolabs building.
@thefenst: That Washburn looks pretty good! Have you played it before? There are some mixed reviews on the model and some similar to that price, but that's the cheapest i've seen for that model.
@snapster: Your kids are adorable. And thanks again for this "silly" website. But Booo Cowboys. Go Jets!
@geode: Well, I'm a Cowboys fan living with a Redskins fan. Some of our Sundays are very interesting.
@glindagw: Are you on an East Coast beach, West Coach or Gulf?
@thilderbrand20: I think bulldogs are some of the most lovable, slobbering, snorting, happy creatures on earth and when they love you, you know it. I miss having a dog. My three cats are all rescued from unhealthy situations, and they don't quite love you the same although they are nice to have around.
I went to school for computer science and applied mathematics, now I work on a website that sells cheap crap on the internet. My family thinks I install Microsoft Office and fix people's "towers" all day long.
I'm 30, and live in St. Louis with my wife and daughter, who made a one day appearance on Woot with Santa (you'll have to hack together some image URLs to see it full-sized): http://www.woot.com/Forums/ViewPost.aspx?PostID=2870922
Before Woot I had a couple interesting jobs (http://careers.stackoverflow.com/smiller). At some point I started a Micro-ISV (http://freshlogicstudios.com) that built National Public Radio's Station Finder (http://www.npr.org/stations/)
I have a secret a cappella history that none of my Woot co-workers know anything about.
@shawnmiller: A cappella? COC?
Wow, nice to see fellow nerds out and about. I used to post quite a bit in the shirt.woot forums, but have fallen out of the habit in the last year. I'm a 42 yr old mom with a BS in physics and an MBA and I am currently an analyst for the Navy, and living in the middle of a california desert. I woot for tee shirts, wine, electronics and occasionally the weird stuff. I love finding deals on all kinds of things, although I'm trying to reduce the amount of 'stuff' in my life. Really. I'm fond of cheese and run-on sentences, and I'm only 5 woots away from my black box. :)
I can go.
I'm a 22 year old senior at Syracuse University studying Chemical engineering (graduation just around the corner). I live in Chicago and plan on going back there after school. In the past year and a half I've started doing home brewing which if my ambitions go as planned (which who can really count on that) I will see myself at a brewery in the future as a career. That being said...if anyone is hiring around now looking for a Chemical Engineer, feel free to hit me up...the job search is a pain.
Love woot though and especially love the community which has evolved from this latest installment of Deals.
@attilathemom: Its good to see you over here! I enjoyed your posts on the shirt dot site! Welcome to the darkside.
What an educated & young bunch most of you are! I live near the Chesapeake Bay. I’ve been a stay-at-home mom for 30 years; shopping clearance, clipping coupons, & sniffing out bargains enabled me to do that.
I cut my teeth on Golf Solitaire on a local BBS on an amber monitor. About 1997 my husband dared me to create a web page with 5mb of free webspace. I puttered & pondered & taught myself html. What began as a 4-page site grew into www.CaryGrant.net w/about 22k unique visitors/month. My hobby gradually evolved into a small word-of-mouth, web design business aimed at small businesses. I’m not very technically savvy (you’ll laugh at my lowly & messy html coding), but I do have a gift for making others’ ideas look good. My clients are happy & I have a few extra dollars to spend on my year-round Christmas shopping.
Deals.Woot adds a whole host of new friends to help me find ways to make my Christmas dollars stretch even further! I thank you whole-heartedly!
P.S. I tend to ramble on.
I'm a 20 year old sophomore at Luther College (Decorah, Iowa) Computer Science and Religion major with Music minor. I play percussion and piano, I like video games, computers, and friends. I work at the school Technical Help Desk, and at a summer camp. I enjoy making movies (youtube.com/jugglingnebula). I've been following Woot since junior year of high school, but just started looking at deals.woot
Nice to meet you all!
holy monkey, y'all are geniuses!! doesn't anyone go to college for liberal arts anymore??
@sand4me: ah yes, the slobber trail of a bulldog is left with love! i have always liked english bulldogs and originally set out to find one, then i found a local breeder of american bulldogs and fell in love with one of their pups. though american bullies are much larger, they are still the same ol' bullies!
I'm a 20 year old junior in NYC getting my bachelors in Chemistry and Art History. I want to go into art conservation, but the future is kind of up in the air. I like gaming and crafting and finding deals that make other people happy.
I'm kinda shy so I'm just getting into deals.woot tho I've been lurking since they opened the beta to green-boxers. I like everyone I've met so far!
@debbiedunlap Can I ask where near the Chesapeake Bay? Some of my family lives in Chance, MD, near Deal Island. I love the area, it's absolutely beautiful.
Let's see I'm 24 years old originally from Montana. I am in the USAF and have which I have been doing for about 6 years now. I just recently received my BSIT with a concentration of Networking and Telecommunications. I currently live and work in Las Vegas where I am a network administrator for 3 separate government domains. I also enjoy doing web design and basically learning about anything tech related.
When not working on computers/networks I play Texas Hold'em as often as I can and am hoping I will have time to play in the World Series of Poker this coming summer. I enjoy all sports and I love to travel. In the past 3 years I have been to 20+ countries in Europe and Asia and hope to keep traveling as much as I can.
I don't have anything specific I look for on deals.woot I just enjoy buying stuff that is cheap lol!
I'm from Ohio and am 31 years young. I love playing sports of any kind and keeping active. I love reading, westerns and suspense mostly, and anything tech related. I'm a mechanical engineer by education, but do industrial engineering for a rather large company in the transportation industry. I love woot and have really enjoyed seeing the variety of deals other wooters have found and shared on deals.woot.
I have two dogs, a boxer and a cocker spaniel that I love beyond measure. They make me happy! I live in the DFW area, have toured Woot Headquarters, and met some of the Woot Staff. They are all very nice!
I like Deals because of all the great people who hang out here, as well as the bargains. I'm female and will turn 50 at the end of March. I can hardly wait... (did you notice I am not doing the happy dance here)?
I'm a resident physician fresh out of medical school last year training to be an anesthesiologist. I'm from the West and warm, but I'm stuck in the Midwest and beyond cold -- looking forward to moving back West in 3.5 years.
As far as deals... very random just depends on my mood and if I have money. Although, anything that makes my life easier makes me happy. =)
@geode: I have played the Washburn before. I'm more of a bass player, but it sounded good to me. :)
I'm living the current version of my life (Round 3 at 34) in St. Louis. I'm a self-employed SEO specialist. This allows me to be home to work on science-fair projects, etc. with my Junior Wooter (daughter). It also gives me the freedom to escape home to satisfy my wanderlust.
While I have a wide variety of interests (sports, music, art, literature, cooking, quilting, outdoor activities, photography) travel is definitely my passion. My daughter and I are in the process of planning a year long around-the-the world trip departing in May, 2011 (assuming that I can get the school and business aspects set). We are also preparing for a 5-week US road trip this summer (I'm posting a challenge for camping stuff if anyone has any advice).
I spend a huge portion of my day online. However, this is the only site that I personally interact on. The deals are interesting but I really enjoy the fun and diverse people.
Fun thread. I live just outside of DC with my husband and two daughters (4 & 8). I am in online marketing and have been with Dyscern for nearly three years. Prior to that, I worked for the Graduate Management Admission Council so all of those of you fellow MBAs hated me at one time (GMAC is behind the GMAT.) I love reading. Currently I am on an American history kick but I consider Jane Austen books as necessary to life as water.
I love deals.woot because I like to over analyze everything I purchase. In terms of posting deals, I am pretty much a one trick pony posting Dyscern deals (though I try and be careful to make sure they are deals before posting.) I am nowhere near as limited when it comes to buying deals though. Joining the site has been pricey for me. :-)
@snapster: I call kudos for asking the question that got that picture of your kids up on woot.
Warning: I will be using terms that you might not have heard of before. have a tab with Wikipedia open for translation.
I am 26, male and live in Monsey NY. I am originally from Chandler AZ, but moved to NY so I could go to yeshiva. I now work in Manhattan in the Wall Street District for a commodities firm as a traffic manager.
I am getting married on May 2nd 2010 to a wonderful young woman. The chupah will be in Suffern NY. I would love to invite all of my deals.woot friends, but space is limited, so I can't invite everybody.
I am a religious Jew and am open to any questions anybody has about Judaism and who and what we are/do.
@hobbit: I have lived on both coasts & a few places in between. I miss both the mountains and the ocean but they'll still be there ten years from now. My daughter is lucky to have her grandparents play a very active role in her life.
@erikadyscern: American History is great!
@lissadelsol: Actually, I live straight across the Bay from Deal Island, in Southern MD. It's amazing how close, yet so far away the Eastern Shore is from us.
@faughtey: "I'm female and will turn 50 at the end of March. I can hardly wait... (did you notice I am not doing the happy dance here)?"
I SO understand!!!
@sgoman5674: mazel tov! Can we please have a woot simcha for you? I was brought up in an orthodox household (although I have since strongly identified with the conservative movement). Which yeshiva did you go to?
