Has anyone built and outdoor thermal type water heater?
So I live out away from gas and live off of a propane tank. Our biggest consumer is the water heater.. I have been looking into tankless and being in AZ we get 360 days of sun a year. A lot of folks do solar panels here and solar water heaters etc etc.
Anyone have experience in this?

Solar water heating doesn't do away with the water heater, but it certainly lessens the need for it to fire up.
I have no experience with it myself, but a quick search yielded this:

Reusing your existing water heater for a storage tank (from the solar heater) and adding a tankless for the boost (when necessary) would probably be your most energy efficient route.
