How much do you expect to save on a refurb?
In general, how much do less than new do you expect a refurbished item to cost? In particular I've been watching prices on 3tb USB hard drives, and the refurbs haven't been coming in that much cheaper lately than the new drives.
For example, there is a listing for a WD refurbished 3tb for $136.99. It's a slightly older model only doing up to USB 2.0. I could also walk in to my local big box retailer and get a WD 3tb with USB3 support, brand new, for $169.99.
To me, a savings of just under 20% - not including shipping - for an older drive doesn't seem to be enough. In my eye a refurb should be 30% off new or better - particularly if the refurb is an older generation than what is available new.
Usually at least 40% off for me. Refurbs tend to have a lesser warranty, hence it better come with a lesser price too.
@narfcake: I agree, I find refurbs are often a great price in comparison to what they used to cost, but with how technology changes, you can often get something better for a little bit more, or even less in some cases. A refurb needs to be much cheaper than a new comparable item for it to be worth it to me.
The refurb price depends on the popularity of the particular item. If the costs are close I opt for the new item.
Refurb should be at least 25% off the lowest retail price. Even if it comes with a new warranty. Also, if it is refurb through anyone other than the manufacturer directly, it should be at least 35% off.
Depends on the actual cost. For a high-ticket item, maybe 20%. For something really cheap, maybe 50% or more.
40%-50% off MSRP, except for specific items that are manufacturer refurbs that have warranties equal to new items.
40-50% is what works for me. Willing to consider lesser discounts for refurbs and/or floor models if original warranty is maintained.
It really depends on what the item is and who its from.
I recently got a kindle fire from amazon refurbed for like 30% off and thought that was a good deal. Of course amazon has a very good return policy and warranty and it came in perfect condition.
