You should be able to get the Droid 1 or 2 for around that price. IMHO they are much better phones.

Check eBay. They give ratings just like amazon and have some cheap Buy It Now phones and regular auction items. I just bought one for ATT on Monday for $28 including shipping that was manufacturer refurbished. It arrived today with plastic on the screen. The reviews are really helpful along with the ratings.

I second @coolphilip04; I would at least look into the Droid 2. I've had mine for a year now; I liked it before, but since the upgrade to Gingerbread fixed a lot of my complaints, I love it. (Note though, the Droid 2 Global hasn't upgraded to Gingerbread yet. The not global version should be cheaper anyway.) It does have the slide out QWERTY keyboard in addition to the on-screen, Swype-capable one, but I don't find the physical keyboard bulky in any way.

I have the Droid X. It's before the Droid 2, but after the Droid 1. It was the powerhouse of it's time (a year ago) and it still works perfect with every app I use. If you do go for Droid (WHICH YOU SHOULD) you should get either X or 2. If you want a physical keyboard you'll have to go 2. But don't mistake Droid 2 with Droid X2. Don't have a Droid X2, sure it's great, but for cheap you'll want a Droid X.

Also forgot to mention that X is 4.3", which is a lot bigger than your average 3.5". But it's definitely worth the size; I can't even stand using smaller phones now.

I should also mention that I had the original LG Chocolate, then went to the LG Dare (it has like ten apps that I never used but it's still a good touchscreen phone) then to the Droid X.

If you're switching to your wife's Verizon account, are you going to be adding a line for yourself? If so, look at Amazon Wireless. I just added my Dad to my plan and they have a ton of phones for $.01. I got him a HTC Incredible 2 for $.01. Awesome deals.

check retailmenot.com. I got an htc inspire 4g for att (was 100) for free with a coupon they had.

Avoid the Samsung Gem. Its a piece of crap. Only runs Android 2.1, which means no moving apps to the memory card. Couple that with the smallest available internal memory of any "SmartPhone", and it becomes fairly useless. If you only want one app that isn't pre-installed, that's fine, but you can't remove the pre-installed apps, such as Tetris and Scrabble, which you have to pay for to use after the free demo. Seriously? I can't remove a demo that I don't use to free up internal memory? I've decided that as soon as I am able to get an upgrade, I'm going to immediately get one and go Office Space on this StupidPhone. Definitely not a SmartPhone. Oh yeah, the battery life is terrible as well. Had to buy an extra charger to keep at work so it will last all day when not being used. It doesn't lock properly, the slightest breeze caused it to become active. Avoid this one like the plague.

I agree with the Droid 2/X posts. I had the Droid 1 forever and it was amazing, so I bought my wife the Droid 2. It's significantly faster than the Droid 1, though I didn't like the changes they made to the keyboard or front screen touch buttons. (Swapped around the henu, home, and back locations) My friend has the Droid X (4.3" screen) and swears by it. He switched to the iPhone for 14 days before he went back to his Droid X.

I upgraded to the HTC Thunderbolt for the 4G capabilities. I thought I would miss the slideout keyboard, but you get used to it. It's a little more pricey and has a few little glitches here and there. But the screen is large (4.3") which helps when reading news/web browsing.

Co-sign on amazon being a great place to pick up phones for cheap. Plus they come with the one year manufacturers warranty whereas a ebay/refurbs don't. One thing to note though is wirefly, amazon, etc. all generally have a pretty hefty penalty for deactivating/suspending a line within the first 6 months. The reason is that their commission on your sale runs on a 180 day "waiting" period to make sure you keep it.

@holymythos: Wow, we have identical phone histories--I too had the original LG Chocolate, then moved to the Dare before getting my Droid. I loved the Dare! Such a good little phone, though I never used it as a smartphone.

I would recommend Motorola Droid 2 over Omnia II. Few facts:
1. newer model released in 2010
2. twice faster processor
3. Mobile Hotspot feature
4. Physical QWERTY keyboard
5. same price $100
