At work, the only music that I like that my coworker likes when closing is 90's alternative rock. I don't like rock, but it's the only thing I can stand that she listens to. She loves heavy metal >.>

At home, if I'm working on something, it's usually either softer electronica or classical.

Classical or Musicals. It calms me so that I don't punch anyone in the face.

I like to listen to a lot of comedic music when i'm doing something that requires me to think. Usually I have my playlist filled with Jon Lajoie, The Lonely Island, and a little bit of DVDA(the South Park guy's band). It helps me to relax a bit more and not stress out about getting things wrong, so I usually do better on stuff.

I generally cannot stand music playing in the background, though in a pinch I can tolerate country music. I do, however, like to have talk radio playing pretty much all the time - even when I am sleeping - and yes, it's coservative talk radio. I am a bonafide right-wing-wacko and proud of it.

The voting on this question seems wierd. As I write this, the original question has been up-voted 12 times with no down votes, but the answers (6 so far) have all been down-voted to zero or less with no up-votes at all. It just seems wierd, but I guess that's life in Wootville.

This is another one of those "so what, who cares" questions to build up rep.

Headphones, with 1400 varied songs on my phone set to random play. Occasionally I'll set it to focus on one artist - usually Shonen Knife, The Raveonettes, Amanda Palmer/Dresden Dolls, or The Kinks. Yes, one of these is not like the others.

What I do is listen to harder music because the voices in my head sing to the songs and leave me alone!

Wooow there, the question changed dramatically from headline to description. I thought you wanted to know what I listen to while working! Then read ahead and we're talking intellectually involving, like programming or doing homework. :p

I don't mess with the radio at work. I see other people do that, and sometimes I see blood. Apparently the toughest person in the warehouse likes Jimmy Buffet, because I hear Margaritaville several times per day.

When doing intellectual tasks it varies greatly from task to task, no? Or even time of day? Homework I always liked blues when tired, hard rock when energetic. I don't program, but I used to work with simple web sites routinely. I don't know why, as I dislike rap, but Tupac seems to increase ones efficiency when using HTML. Try it.

I'm a software engineer. In most cases of my day, I listen to music (unless I'm doing something very complex). Mostly hard rock to metal, however I also have a lot of spoken word comedy albums on my Zune. Sometimes I bust out laughing like a maniac. My officemate just gives me an odd look.....

When you are in a artsy industry like me, music helps inspire and keep you in a good work flow. I usually listen to the insane works of infected mushroom but other days I'm normal and listen to alternative rock. I love listening to music on pandora because it keeps a good mix of new and old most of the time.

I usually listen to Slacker radio to block out the horrible pop music playing on the radio. Hearing Katy Perry 8+ times a day makes me want to punch someone. But I can only wear 1 headphone, so I still hear it off an on :/

Trance on Pandora if the project is complex or I have to think hard. Otherwise nothing...

Woot... at least in some small part powered by heavy metal bagpipes since late 2009 (even before they paid me, to be completely honest). I listen to hard rock, metal and folk music of the German, Scandinavian or generally European bent. This is mostly met with curiosity or disdain, but I don't fault anyone their musical tastes. Unless you like Rebecca Black; then, get out.
