Why did my restaurant Gift Card deal get erased?
Now before you get huffy and tell me it was a popular deal a couple weeks ago, no. That was a Gift Certificate. I voted it up too, and bought a couple! This is a gift card, available to Many different restaurants. You aren't locked into one you pick. Now -- I am conscientious and did a thorough search, and couldn't come up with anything that was my deal. It was for giftcard.restaurantwith the code SAVOR. If you can find tell me where this exact deal is, then I will concede. But I also make this point. I didn't just search a few pages for this deal, I searched the keywords- restaurant, restaurant.com, and giftcard for it and got nothing.
If you tattle deals, MAKE SURE they are actually duplicates before you send them in. This was a really good deal, and i don't think it was a duplicate. Annoyed.

Because someone probably tattled that it was a duplicate deal with out actually checking to make sure. I know one like this was posted this morning, but the password was different, the password that person used was savir.
@hobbit: They misspelled the code? Priceless. But even so I couldn't find that deal. Sigh. Some days you can't win.
I know it seems unfair, but I do want to point out that on most things, it takes multiple tattles (and not from the same person) to get a deal deleted. I think that the shock of seeing something you posted disappear never goes away (just in case someone out there is wondering what the big deal is).
Often, @hobbit or I would be in the midst of replying to a question, only to have the site give us back an error. Then we would see that the question had been deleted. Most of the questions that were deleted probably should have been, but in some cases we'd posted long back and forth conversations, and it was a bit upsetting to know that all of those comments were just gone.
I have sympathy for you, but also remind you that it's fairly impersonal from the other side. I'm sure they get overwhelmed with things, now and then.
Annoyed. Interesting. Not as annoyed as I was when I tried to add to cart and went nowhere. :)
Try another link.
I'll keep an eye out for it.
@jumbowoot: the link the OP posted above works.
@shrdlu: Yeah, i know. That was the shocker, it was deleted before i could even add the comment of where to search for local restaurants. Gone at the speed of a bad Nick Cage carjacking movie.
@jumbowoot: The add to cart button didn't work? That's really weird, it went right through for me. Lets try this: giftcard.restaurant
EDIT: @hobbit: you posted while i was typing. Oops! Thanks.
@geode: IE7. Same thing. Clicking the Add to cart button returns you to the page you are on. No cart. No account setup. Nothing. Just back to the page where you originally landed.
@jumbowoot: Uh...did you actually add an item first under the quantity button before you clicked add to cart? I use chrome, so i'm not sure if its a browser issue, but I haven't had any problems with either webpage, and neither apparently has @hobbit.
@geode: Got it. Did you ever repost your deal? I haven't seen it.
@jumbowoot: I didn't, since i figured it would get deleted again. But I will go ahead now.
and a cranky tuna is moaning in the deal thread.
@jumbowoot: You told her to post it. Why did it get deleted this time????? Because One person tattled? The same person who posted a stuffed herpes plushie?
@hobbit: I'm a guy. ;)
These deleted deals are hurting my rep too. Not that it really matters, but i was near the cusp and dropped back to 99/100 again because of this. C'est la vie.
You DO realize that these are not REAL gift cards right?
They are gift cards FOR restaurant - NOT for an actual restaurant.
You buy the gift card from restaurant, then give it to someone. They then go to the website and buy a non-discounted certificate with it.
It's pointless to buy it for yourself, as it's no different than buying a cert at 80% off with one of the hundred restaurant deals posted here a week.
Again, it's NOT a gift card that you use at a restaurant. It's a gift card that you use to buy a CERTIFICATE at restaurant.
And they are barely worth the paper they are printed on. Last one I bought, I got a $50 for about $20. I bought $30 worth of food, drinks were not included. So far, I've saved $10. Not wanting to waste money and forfeit $20 of the certificate, we bought extra food to take home. Then, because we used the certificate, the they tacked on a 22% gratuity. $20 cert + $15 drinks + $14 tip = $49 total cost. I saved nothing.
@lorddamax: Seriously, go whine elsewhere. Restaurant IS a good deal. There's a reason so many of them have gone popular. case in point: http://deals.woot.com/deals/details/a5245ae3-6614-46bf-b197-b705ad75391a/restaurant-com-80-off-is-back#35 Got 63 votes on the certificates.
Gift cards are even better because they give you the choice of ANY of the restaurant deals, whenever you want to redeem them. If you had such a bad time with this, you frankly just aren't very good at getting a deal. Besides, if you had used an 80% off deal, your $50 cert would have been 4.00 instead of 20. I've been able to get 100 bucks of food for 54 dollars before (+ tip of course), and 25 dollars for 15. So please, kindly, take your fact-sparse cranky elsewhere. You've annoyed me enough for the day.
@geode: And how does a gift card allow you to get any restaurant cert whenever you want, and a credit card doesnt?
Those things are 80% off more often than they arent.
But, yeah, I'm the cranky one. You're right. My bad.
Amazing deals that anyone should go crazy for always get deleted. Twice.
i wonder if @jumbowoot is going around trying to find out who deleted the deal, now that he figured out how it worked and said it was okay to post.
@lorddamax < @jumbowoot. Jumbo askes me to repost, I do. I don't feel the need to clutter this thread with any more argument, so i'll stop here.
@hobbit: thanks for the support!
@jumbowoot: if you'd like this deal reposted again, you should put it up there yourself this time, so it is immune to inane tattlers whining about a deal they don't like.
Cheerio, i'm going to do more productive things for the rest of the day.
someone else has posted it, let's see how long this one stays up http://deals.woot.com/deals/details/7a2d593d-aa1a-4356-aad2-7d3581978acc/introducing-restaurant-com-gift-cards-savings-on-25-50-or-100-options#0
@lorddamax: What is your problem? I'm busy with other things, but you've ramped right up to annoying. Since when did you become the arbiter of all things allowed on Deals? Geeze louise, take a vacation from being a jerk for a few days.
So, you don't like the coupon. We DON'T care. You want to spend some time doing the police action over on the Fresh tab, go after the MLM postings, or the random spam crap, or phishing sites, but please, just because YOU don't like something, don't be trying to make life suck for everyone else.
Lighten up. Seriously.
@geode: I only use the flounder thwack stuff when I actually LIKE someone. Here, not so much.
Staff: PLEASE do not delete this comment. You're welcome to send me email, and tell me I'm a bad person. Heck, you're welcome to tell me so right here. Just leave this comment be. Thanks.
@shrdlu: <3
Oh, and it was me who suggested the flounder. My bad. Flounder for good people. Smackdown for bad people. Got it.
@geode: I saw it was you, and just changed my comment now. Got your back. I hate injustice more than anything.
Shrdlu == Karma Delivery Machine.
Oh, and I've already been busy, voting for comments here and there. Please note geode reputation == 100/100. Voting is good.
@shrdlu: I didn't invoke the flounder. I talked about tuna.
Just remember, folks, it's customary to tip the waitperson a percentage of your dinner bill PRIOR to the discounted amount.
Arguments from the cheap in 3-2-1....
No arguments here! I have been a waiter, NEVER tip on discounted rates. that's not cool. In fact, you got a great deal, cut your server in on a little.
On a side note, looks like the repost from the other poster will go popular. Oh, the irony. Where's @lorddamax to spout off now? J/k. I hope it goes pop. I'm not reposting.
@lavikinga: ++ on the tipping comments. My minimum tip is $5, no matter what the amount I payed was. Bellboy? $5. Cup of coffee at a restaurant? $5. My metric for tipping often depends on the place, as well. Depending on the average cost of the meal, it may range from 15% to 25%, and I'm a strong believer in remembering to figure in meal+tax+appropriate tip to see whether or not you ought to order something from the menu.
I don't mind overtipping either, and do it often. It makes me happy, it makes the wait staff happy, it's a complete win-win.
Here's my number one rule, though. If it's at all possible, and especialy in places where the average meal is under twenty, if you're going to use a card to pay for the meal, please tip in cash. The gov has some pretty ugly and stupid rules about tips being taxable, and while I don't worry so much for the wait staff in a high-end place, that kid working at Denny's can use every single break.
@lorddamax: We used these when we went to Vegas, worked great. $100. Value for $40 - easy decision when we were going to eat like kings. We saved a bunch of money using these.
You have to be a smart shopper. See where you can use them in your area (or where you are going to vacation) & choose the value that suits your budget/meal.
@geode - I hope you get an answer as to why your post is disappearing I think quite a few of us voted for it - it was going to go popular I think.
@combustiblekitty- Thanks! I hope so too, but someone else posted it in the mean time, and I'm not about to pass the tattling on, so I'll let them get the popular post on this one. I've already ordered 3 cards, so I'm happy either way. :)
I always tip at least 20% I am way too lazy to more math than that so it is always 10% x 2. Easy, having grown up in the business I know how the tip gets split up at larger establishments it isn't just for the wait person they often have to pay the busboy, bartender, and anyone else who helped them during a shift. So if we had drinks we make sure we tip even more after all they did all the work that I didn't have to do, I get to go home to a clean kitchen and not do dishes.
@shrdlu: Unfortunately, many people aren't as generous. I did a bit of waiting tables in my high school & college years. I don't think most people have an understanding of what goes into taking care of a customer's needs or know about tipping out the busboys, bar tenders, etc.
I find I get the best service if I treat my waiter as a human rather than a cog in the restaurant wheel. It's amazing what a smile & a polite attitude towards a waiter gets in return, especially if I'm going to be asking for a substitution or special order.
My husband & I tip exceedingly well, %20 being our usual minimum. His attitude is that an extra few more dollars added to the tip won't break our piggy bank, but it can make a big difference to our waiter. And a waiter who sees that his or her service is appreciated will usually bust their fanny for us the next time we frequent the establishment.
If the food (& not the service)is bad, we take it up with management and don't take it out on the waiter.
@hobbit: "The same person who posted a stuffed herpes plushie?"
This is the reason I love reading your posts!!
@geode: Mine did the same thing. Posted, lots of quick votes, and then gone.
Some tipping lore...
I was told once by a restaurant owner that tips on credit cards can be tracked easily, and the IRS presumes that amount to be correct. Reports for cash are taxed at the 15% (or whetever is current) rate, regardless of the actual draw. He also said that they do try to play fair and report cash tips at slightly above 15% to avoid audits (this may not be common practice - I have no idea).
Anyway, what I got out of it is this: if paying by CC, tip 15% straight on the card, then anything additional in cash. It's sometimes a pain, but if the service was anything above average, it's worth it to give them something extra for their pockets.
FWIW, I don't think tips should be taxed at all until they exceed the allowed amount for family gifts - about $10k/year.
@irradiated: All tips - regardless of amount - are supposed to be taxed as regular income. Credit card tips are impossible to hide, but it's not difficult to "accidentally" forget a $50 somewhere at the end of the night.
Wait staff dont even make minimum wage. Last time I checked here it was around 3 dollars. How would you feel if you spent 30+ minutes serving a table and you didnt get a tip? Yes like the other poster said the tips are then often split between busboys, etc...
Most people waiting tables are in tough economic condition as is. Why not throw them an extra few bucks.
Also, big props to the person that tips at least $5 minimum, I do that too :)
My first wife was a waitress and I know the horror stories... So a little bit extra makes thier day
@shrdlu: Difference between taxes and tipping please?
