I cant be the only one who isn't surprised...

vote-for29vote-against

You beat me to the punch, well played. Yes, I'm pissed. Why on earth would they have the link live prior to releasing the last clue, ridiculous.

vote-for17vote-against

I figured I'd at least get a server timeout, and not get one the "usual" way. Not by it being sold out before they even give out the last piece of the map.

This is really a new low.

vote-for31vote-against

Can we get a mod or someone to comment on this? I played fair and wasted my whole day trusting that woot would surely make it so the BOC was locked until all was revealed. I'm really pissed... So many of us followed the rules and played along having a good time, but this... this is ridiculous.

vote-for17vote-against

Definitely got strung along thinking that this would by my chance to get a BOC. I even spent 5 minutes per piece editing the map on paint ( I just learned how to crop things together for this hunt)... But when the next to last piece came up (11th out of 12), I found that people had already cracked the last few letters and that the BOC was sold out. Not really fair to the rest of us who tried to do it fairly :/ Was hoping to finally get an elusive BOC for my birthday week. Guess not...

vote-for19vote-against

Yes, this was a complete FU to everyone who played by the rules to hunt down all the fekkin puzzle pieces only to find out that the BOC was already brute-force guessed before the last puzzle piece was released.

vote-for24vote-against

It was a fun idea, but the execution was just bad. The people who stuck it out till the end didn't even get a chance. Oh well, at least I have my Wootizen BOC to look forward to!

vote-for17vote-against

Yeah, I was pretty dissappointed. I had the url all typed up waiting to get the last letters, only to find that it was already sold out. Bummer.

vote-for17vote-against

Shame on you, Woot. Shame! Plenty of us played by the rules and waited ALL day to piece together your stupid treasure map, and then once we get it, we're greeted with it being sold out for over an hour? Why the hell did you make the buy link live BEFORE the last piece was released?

So long, Woot, I'm never buying anything from the Woot Off again if you decide to pull this crap on us.

Congrats to all those who got a bag, but a great many of us did not and we played by your rules.

/end rant

vote-for19vote-against

@jeremytheindian @kmeltzer, I couldn't agree more! Seriously, lets get some mods in here to do some explaining because I can't believe how many of us were just treated. @thunderthighs @gatzby @inkycatz @jumbowoot @thefenst just to name a few off the top of my head.

vote-for16vote-against

when i brought up the page and it was sold out, i initially thought to myself "did i blank out on 2 minutes of my life and just not get to the page quick enough?". come to find out, the link was posted elsewhere by someone who had figured out the url before the last piece went up.

well that sucks. i was having fun playing along, too. maybe next time we can have a woot-your-own-adventure game instead?

vote-for16vote-against

They worked pretty hard to prevent collusion in the forums, and that burned a lot of people who spent most of 24 hours playing by the rules and (gasp!) having a good time with the community. I found this much more fun than the usual woot-off fodder... though I spent so much time refreshing the forums that I largely ignored the items.

I'm the most interested in the part where a number of the purchases were not just right before the final piece went up... but perhaps hours before?

vote-for14vote-against

This was probably expected all along otherwise the servers would have crapped out as usual when the last puzzle was posted. Still crappy though. I don't think I'll be participating in the second "hunt".

vote-for13vote-against

This really wasn't what I expected. A good idea, I guess, but very poorly executed. Really disappointing for those of us who didn't cheat.

vote-for16vote-against

Not surprised at all, but deflated. I was really trying to be positive about the new way the BOCs are happening. I knew people would start guessing the URL. I was even doing it, but I thought for sure they would have gathered that and safeguarded it.

Oh well. I guess jokes on us.

vote-for17vote-against

Dear Woot: Maybe in the future just go back to the standard woot server crashing BOC, that way you only waste a little bit of my day instead of an entire day...still upset. Grumble Grumble, ::kicks wall::

vote-for16vote-against

Really I was having a good time with it. I figured hey maybe today is my day... I mean If I get beat that's fine, if my browser fails whatever but we didn't have a stinking chance! I've been pretty faithful to Woot. I've never complained about Amazon stuff (I don't think things have changed except for the better) or the shirt change (they got to make a buck that's cool) But this is the first time I feel truly shafted, screwed, lied to whatever.

I won't waste my time tomorrow and that makes me sad because I love woot-offs but this crap has left me not caring.

vote-for16vote-against

That pretty much sealed it woot. Everything I've said in other posts does not come near how I feel about this travesty.

You had 10 Pieces (not even full-fledged bags) of crap last week - how many BOCs were there today? Another 10? Pathetic! Worse yet...I was stupid enough to think this might be a legit BOC offering.

I see what you've done. It's pretty sad. No longer willing to play this little game.

vote-for12vote-against

link was posted on twitter well before the last piece was given. The only way Woot could have prevented a that is to not activate the link until the last piece was given.

vote-for12vote-against

I can tell you one thing. I won't be spending as much time on it tomorrow.

vote-for9vote-against

@saramwrap: From what I'm gathering (reading around) it's possible the URL was brute-forced. As well, there are other forums on other sites discussing it and sharing the URL.

vote-for11vote-against

@veroniquehicks: That's what the right thing to have done would have been, yes? Activate the link when the last piece came out. Or, at least of done it when the next-to-last one came out.

Or, if it were sold out to just say "Hey, sorry... go to bed. Come back tomorrow! Sold out!"

vote-for10vote-against

@kmeltzer: Completely agree. Just a simple heads up from staff that it was already sold out would have saved me a lot of time and I mostly likely wouldn't have been as pissed as I am right now.

vote-for12vote-against

@neolithicx: My thoughts exactly! The brute force bots took over, and dudek (first B O C buyer) confirmed it (not quite half way down the page): http://www.woot.com/forums/viewpost.aspx?postid=5171757&pageindex=1&replycount=181#post5171803

vote-for12vote-against

Complete bust. I guess the moral of the story is: don't hang out at woot, go to slickdeals instead.

vote-for12vote-against

Yep, hosed along with everyone else. Doesn't pay to play by the rules I guess. Kids Woot had a couple of items I missed earlier (Graco Baby Swing, Baby Monitor) so I'd planned on seeing if they came back up tomorrow...totally worth it now to spend the extra few bucks and go shopping in town.

Kinda glad I missed dropping that hundred on Woot now... See ya!

vote-for11vote-against

Yeah, poorly executed. I guess I'm just dumb for assuming (see? dumb) that the last piece would have something unexpected on it, like a bunch of letters or numbers in tiny type or something similar that would keep it from being guessable or scriptable or whatever. Otherwise, what's the point?

I mean, kudos to the people who got one, because they just worked the system that Woot set up. I just feel stupid for all the time that I spent on the map and believing that Woot had measures in place to make the map-piecing worthwhile.

vote-for9vote-against

@jeremytheindian: Same here. I was really catching on, thinking hey this kind of a cute idea. And really not that hard once you got the hang of it. Against my better judgement, I stayed up a little late for it.

I'm sitting here, eating some pad thai, watching a movie waiting for the last map piece. Then I refresh a page and see a post that its sold out. No ways aboot it, that's a bummer. And I blame woot squarely on that one. The BOC can go to hell - I've scored a bunch of them (never got anything good either....). I was enjoying the game. They blew it.

vote-for13vote-against

I still had fun. Those slickdeals guys were some really good pirates today.

That being said: it was a huge mistake to have the link active before the last piece went up.

vote-for-8vote-against

Nope. Not a waste of time.

vote-for13vote-against

The mods have been deleting the posts with the URL!
Let's see how long the URL lasts here: http://www.woot.com/offers/fcwceckmfonptdmipwaacbfmigws

vote-for9vote-against

@llamabox: How so? Sure there was no certainty of getting anything at the end but the idea that there was never a chance sucks any possible fun from the situation.

vote-for7vote-against

There was a rule that said you couldn't guess the last two letters?

vote-for17vote-against

copying from the thread over on main woot:

@ThunderThighs: "First, let us apologize for this. There were indeed cheaters that worked out the URL early. Those sales happened VERY fast and we stopped the sale. That's why you are seeing Sold Out. We are going to cancel all those orders.

Second, we can identify the first 200 users who hit the custom URL after the final piece launched. These are the users who should have gotten a Buccaneers of Caribbean (our quantity was 200). We are working out how to make things right for the "Honest 200". As always, that represents only a very small percentage of customers who wanted a Buccaneers of Caribbean but it was our intent that you all have a fighting chance.

So please put down the torches, take a calming breath and go ahead and go to bed. Some of you will get good news tomorrow.

And we're making sure that this cannot happen again with tomorrow's map. Please give us another chance. Thanks. "

vote-for3vote-against

@panthiest: It was posted on slickdeals and taken advantage of by people who could care less about woot or the game. It should have been locked down and the orders should be cancelled.

vote-for10vote-against

I know which site I won't visit tomorrow. I spent all day there today, if you need a hint. Apology not accepted nor acceptable. JM2C

vote-for6vote-against

@kfujita: Thanks for the info. At least a mod is responding (thanks @thunderthighs). It's just frustrating that this even happened... Hopefully the 200 ppl who got to the BOC site legitimately will be rewarded. I got to the site at 11:54pm est, but I don't think it was quick enough. GL to those of you who got there before me!

vote-for9vote-against

Can't even describe the rage felt after putting in all the effort, thinking this might be a good plan for the "dedicated" wooters, only to see the SD post by chance and learn that it was already sold out before the last map piece was released, including a "leaked" illustration of the complete map.

Truly a new low in a long series of new lows. It beggars belief.

vote-for14vote-against

Wow, love the wording "There were indeed cheaters that worked out the URL early."

So being able to comprehend the patternmethod for the BOC URL (first red letters, herp derp) and then guessing the missing two letters is cheating? Nice Woot... nice.

Also, for everyone complaining about folks from Slickdeals... wake up, you're in no way superior. They are just as hardcore Woot lovers as you are.

vote-for12vote-against

@jsimsace: Agree. Too little, too late and too often.

Note: This is NOT directed at @Thunderthighs - it's directed to TPTB of woot. Unbelieveably bad form.

vote-for7vote-against

Thanks @thunderthighs. I like that you all do your best.

vote-for9vote-against

@gmwhit: Agreed! I'm tired of it all! Loyalty means nothing anymore, especially to the TPTB, not TT personally!

vote-for8vote-against

@kfujita: Folks should up-vote kfujita's post so it gets seen.

I'm one of the patient players, but some things can't be fairly anticipated.
Don't get too PO'ed at people that could not have controlled the "pirates" plundering.
It's a learning moment for the game designers.

vote-for24vote-against

First, I don't think anything was plundered. Do NOT consider those who found the answer early cheaters either. Also, don't think Slick Deals people were the only ones working on this together. If you think other groups of people were not joining in on possible solutions, perhaps you're naive. I also do not agree w/taking the BOCs away from those who, IMO, legitimately (according to the way woot presented it) won them.

The problem was wholly woot's - they activated the link before they showed the final piece of the map. NO excuse for that whatsoever! And there were only 200 BOCs! Had I known that, I would not have bothered trying. 200? Really woot? Again, too little, too late, and too often.

And, once again, this is not directed at @Thunderthighs, nor any of staff who was not involved in creating this...how you say?...little oft repeated "oops"! TT is merely trying to gracefully recover and clean the egg of woot's face. And Thank You for doing that, TT!

vote-for17vote-against

For anyone that's interested in the inverse of this situation, I've posted my letter to woot on the forums here:

http://deals.woot.com/questions/details/7d847194-cfc2-40f8-a639-110182326e2f/did-you-see-capguncowboys-letter-to-woot#4

If anyone is offended by that, then I'm sorry. I'm just not fond of being called a cheater when I did nothing wrong.

vote-for9vote-against

I have to say, I was upset to learn that people had forced their way to the URL using bots and violated the spirit, if not the letter, of the game, but a broad cancellation of orders for everyone is unfair to the ones who followed along w/ the rest of us and just made a lucky guess. There is nothing sinister in guessing 15 minutes earlier than everyone else and those guys shouldn't be punished. I'm disappointed I didn't get a BOC, but cancellations should be done on a case by case. The fault lies in how the game was setup, but honestly, it wouldn't have been any fun if you didn't have an opportunity to go for it. Absolutely, cancel the orders of the DBs who got on and mocked everyone who couldn't write bot code, and next time, unless there is a way to detect a forced attack on the URL, just modify the rules. No great way to fix this, but a little flexibility towards both sides of the argument seems to be appropriate.

vote-for1vote-against

@llamabox: What is annoying and frustrating about this narrative is you think we would be naive enough to believe that you managed to manually enter over 200 possible combinations in a relatively short period of time to find the missing 2 letters.

vote-for-2vote-against

to the guys who made the brute force bots and conquered: you guys are boss and I hope you guys long life and good fortune because you are smarter than these peasants

vote-for13vote-against

I had a feeling yesterday that this was going to be a huge amount of work and most likely ending up with a bunch of nothing, so I stayed away. This just confirms that I was correct. I would have guessed that people would try and guess the solution, but I didn't think that Woot would be (and I'm being nice here) so shortsighted as to make the link live prior to releasing the last piece of the puzzle.
