A question tagged both meta and chat? LUDICROUS!

Anyways, Android.
Blackberry is a dying race that was good for business people.
Windows Mobile was something that never really hit home.
iPhone had it's prime but it's long gone. I hear people switching from iOS to Android every day but I've never heard of one person switching from Android to iOS. Not one person.

I know people who've switched from Android to iPhone; most of them were people who hated AT&T, and waited until the iPhone was available at alternatives. They're both good phones, depending on what it is that you like.

WindowsMobile? I'd rather not, thanks. Really. No thank you. REALLY. NO!

I was a confirmed Crackberry user from the early days. RIM drove me away (they decided that I liked spam from them, on my phone; I don't). I have an Android phone now, but I still miss the BB now and then. Wait. What were the other choices? Oh, yeah. The Palm Pre relatives are effectively killed, so that's out, too.

Trust me on this. Go try them both. Tell the salesdroids you ONLY want brief answers to questions, and no other help. Make a list beforehand of the things that are must haves for you, and test them all.

One of my must haves is a keyboard, so the iPhone was never under consideration. I wish I could have a modern Android WITHOUT a touch screen.

Blackberry will remain because it's the only phone system that allows for secured e-mail. A lot of corporate and goverment companies require that additional security.

Where I live, Verizon coverage was far superior to AT&T for a LONG time. About the time they released iPhones on the Verizon market, AT&T's coverage area improved. So, for a long time our market was dominated by Android phones. Once the iPhone became available for everyone, there was a good sized flood to iOS.

I personally stick with Android only because I have a ton of apps from the Amazon app market. But I do own an iPad.

4G Hotspot capabilities (HTC Thunderbolt) + iPad = Amazing

I do miss my keyboard, but I'm starting to get used to the touch screen.

@shrdlu: I was anti-touch screen until I decided to get an LG Dare a good five years ago. It took me a week to get used to it, and for that entire week I thought I made a horrible decision for a phone, but in the end I learned that touchscreen is a lot better IMO. Sure, I can't text while driving anymore, but that's a good thing. I can text a good 3x faster on a touchscreen than I could on an actual phone keyboard.

Plus, touchscreen keyboards are a lot bigger in size than actual phone keyboards, which is a definite selling point.

@holymythos: I think you misread what I said. I didn't say one was better than the other, I said I preferred one over the other. Touch screens are actually inferior (to me) for many things. YMMV.

I only use the touch screen stuff on my current android for those things that cannot be done any other way. I can type nearly as fast on my my phone keyboard as I can on the computer keyboard, and that's pretty fast. I can also do it without looking, except for those odds and ends that seem to be in different spots, or must be brought up using one of the function keys.

@shrdlu: The acronym IMO means "In My Opinion". Meaning, my post meant that In My Opinion touchscreens were better. Meaning no, I didn't misunderstand you.

I also don't mean to sound mean, I'm breaking my cardinal rule of no foruming with nicotine or caffeine.

I have no idea what OS would be on my phone. I do not have a data plan. My phone is only for texting and talking. If I want a computer I use a computer. I like big screens.

Apparently, I will be of no help, but I just felt the need to give my $0.02.

I am using an older version of Android (1.6) on the Nextel network. Unfortunately I am locked into the current version because of my need to be on Nextel. It's OK, but quirky and not always as intuitive as I would expect. I had one client try to switch from iPhone to a Windows phone but switched back after a month. Maybe Microsoft will get it right next year with the Win8 version. My impression is that almost everyone finds the iPhone to be pretty good, but the geek types prefer Android.

Right now I've got a 6 year old clamshell phone... but if someone were gracious enough to buy me a data plan I'd probably go with a windows phone since I don't care about games/apps and I really like the UI. Plus I always like underdogs.

Ive got an old HTC Tilt that I have rebuilt 3 or four times. Put windows mobile 6.5 on it. Its clunky, fat, heavy and doesnt always work right but it was before data requirements so there is no added monthy cost.

But i've used android and iphones. You get an android if you want to customize things and you get an iphone for the ecosystem. The ecosystem for istuff is how they get you and keep you.

I use a basic slide phone because I'm poor, but I have a BB through my job (data only) and can't stand it for web browsing or apps, and I don't like the email that much either. If I had the money I'd get an iPhone... love my iPod touch.

Droid without a doubt
More phone choices
More Apps

I have always been "anti-apple", but ever since I got a free iPod Touch from @jumbowoot (btw thank you again!) I have slowly been turning to the "dark side" and loving the functionality of the iPod versus Android!..

And now that Sprint is getting the IPhone 5 this October (about time!), I will be upgrading to it instead of going with the Samsung Galaxy S II.

Blackberry and WindowsMobile are both awful though

"windows mobile" was never very good, but windows phone 7 is the most remarkable phone i've ever owned (samsung focus)

Well, I have an Atrix, so Android for me. Part of the reason I got that is the fact that iPhone hardware isn't even in the running compared to my phone, the other is because I hate Apple and went phoneless until various things happened that required I have some method of communication in emergencies.
Either way, anything is better than a company that strings people along with with jokingly poor updates that require a new device, instead of just releasing the full version. Like prescription companies only releasing half of the cure to keep people buying, that is Apple. That, and the only way to get the iOS fully functional is to jailbreak it, which Apple decided was illegal and locked -many- peoples phones, forcing them to buy new ones. Turns out? Not illegal just because Apple said so. :p

@shrdlu: I know you can disable touchscreen keyboard input (I can on my droid). Does that help?

vote-for2vote-against

@rlapid2112: Ah, you're sweet, but that only makes it less useful. There are some things that really work better if there's a touchscreen. The only application I care about, Kindle, expects it (for example). I had the little trackball on the crackberry, and I find that (at least in the morning) it's tough to be accurate when scrolling through a long list of things; usually my contacts, which number approximately 500. Yes, There are about 500 people that I keep in touch with, more or less (or at least need access to their data).

It won't kill me. Thanks for the thoughtfulness, though.

To answer the OP's question, I use Android and really like it. Someone here posted about using a phone only to make calls and to send text messages, that computers should be used for everything else. Well, e-mail from my phone is supremely useful; I am connected to an exchange server and to a pop server. Additionally, since getting my Droid (original OG droid) I haven't needed to use my laptop at clients offices or at Starbucks. The number of quality, free apps for Android is amazing.

Android. My new Comet phone is smaller than most iPhones, etc., so it fits in my hand and in my pocket better. Still has a nice big screen, though. I don't use it for accessing the 'net - that's what my computer is for. It's got a great qwerty board for texting and speaker phone mode picks up my voice while I'm cooking and have it laying on the counter nearby, so I can talk to friends while making dinner.

I loved my tiny candy bar type Samsung t509 but it didn't pick up my voice for sh*t, I practically had to yell into it at close range. My Comet is a vast improvement.

I love my HTC Android, I just wish there was a way to get podcasts that's as easy as my Zune or my iPod were. Other than that, I love the customization and the HTC interface. And I haven't even rooted.

No question, BlackBerry hands down. You couldn't pay me to use an iphone. There are some good Android phones, but BBs are/were built for quality and business apps. Apple wants their phone to be a mini game console and Google is so afraid of Apple, they have only marginally improved on ios, which isn't actually that hard to do.
