my dir 625 has been outstanding, and I paid about $70 for it a few years ago, I think. Never tried hooking it up to multiple 360's, but I have no problems on xboxlive while the kids are using the wii online and at least 2 computers are browsing the web and [edit: keep it legal] all at the same time.

@iggz: They are currently using a WRT546, you mentioned the Linksys WRT54GL with the open source firmware. Would that be a 2nd wireless router in the house or would you try all 4 360s on the router?

vote-for4vote-against

@iggz: That won't even do N wireless! I have three of them and some versions are not compatible with DD-WRT (at least not a year or so ago when I was doing it). I have had MUCH better luck with a Buffalo and a Cisco (running in bridge mode).

I especially like the Buffalo because they provide their own DD-WRT firmare.

FYI Woot WebMaster....when I clicked on the 2 new egg links above I got blocked for phishing this is the link: http://tinyurl.com/3gqnhol
Belongs to category : Phishing & Fraud
Firewall (ProSecure UTM5)
I can copy an paste the link and it works just fine.
Hope this helps.

@caffeine_dude: That's just an affiliate link. Not even fishing...

@benyust2: Hence why I said IF YOU FLASH IT WITH THIRD PARTY FIRMWARE, CAN I MAKE IT ANY CLEARER

@caffeine_dude: Never tried 4 Xboxs personally, but these people seem to think it works fine (but they mention the WRT54G):

This is definitely an older router, but people still love it. There might be something better out there that's newer, but I don't know what it is.

Linksys WRT54GL + DD-WRT software
http://it.toolbox.com/blogs/php-bsd-me/linksys-wrt54gl-ddwrt-software-15026

"Hungry for an open source wireless router I picked up a WRT54G and a WRT54GL from TigerDirect. My intention was to try out and report on the DD-WRT software project. Both the WRT54G and the WRT54GL are supposed to work with DD-WRT, however, their may be issues with WRT54G."

With that said, I'd choose the WRT54GL over the WRT54G if I were just looking at these routers.

@iggz: Yeah, you could make it clearer how that is the best router ever. It may be decent but, by no means is it the best ever whether it is flashed with open source firmware or not. In my experience, some versions of the router (which is difficult to find out until you are holding it), can't be flashed directly. Maybe the DD-WRT guys have solved this by now but this router has wasted too much of my time already.

@benyust2: It's all an opinion, nothing more. You made an opinion up there too, and I disagree with it. Don't get your little whitey-tighties in a bunch.

vote-for5vote-against

@iggz: I have that one. Works great. @benyust2: Worth mentioning that only the new (black) XBoxes have Wireless N built-in. Older (gray/white) ones you will need an adapter (http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wireless-Network-Adapter-Networks/dp/B002RS7NB2) to use N instead of G.

@caffeine_dude: Ackshully, I've seen that same comment (yours, before the edit) so many times that the response is stock. I didn't even pay attention to the name I was replying to. Just so you know...

@shrdlu: UGGG you should feel my pain! I just lost a full box of great follow up questions to the shadow box...I will recreate them later, too sad now :(

@kamikazeken are you sure? I can use all my bandwidth when torrents or when downloading newsgroups...Of course I only download legally free items :)

@thefenst Wow great mention I will check for N XBoxes.

@shawnmiller @iggz so is the DD-WRT mandatory? The reason I ask:
So this is free advice for someone at work...so far but if I need to get into the routers and install/flash 3rd party software and configure I will need to charge something.
I asked the parent if the kid knew what MTU was and did he install 3rd party software. I assume you will say yes because of the QOS and turn up the ability to turn up the radio power.

@iggz to be fair I think you were a bit hard on @benyust2, I doubt you can flash a G router to enable N @anyone Please correct me if I am wrong.

@everyone assuming that there is not enough traffic to kill their network. She said they were paying extra for high speed (that would be 20 down in my area.) Splitting up the Xboxes on 2 different wireless routers using the older one as an AP connected to the newer router lets say in port 1? Is it possible they are over taxing the current router? I know in theory G =54mbps.

@iggz @thefenst @shawnmiller @benyust2 good links thanks!

any reason all 4 have to be connected wirelessly?
shouldn't wired be more reliable?

vote-for3vote-against

@kamikazeken: 4 boys 4 bedrooms and mom does not want to run any wire.

@thefenst: I had no idea that 360 Slims had built-in wifi - and that's just one of those things a guy like me should know.
