I did see this.

I thought it was a very cool idea to wide-release one of them so that anyone could have a shot at it. I do have to admit, if I had $100K to blow, this would be high on my current list of things to throw money at.

Great addition to a man-cave :) Wonder how high the bidding will go...

From the title, I thought this was going to look like the computer that was always on Captain Picard's ready-room desk.

Yes I saw them and immediately - ENVY. I can't afford to even think about entering that fray. VERY COOL though.

So it's got mediocre hardware and no special software. OK so it's kind of cool looking but nothing really shocking, and it's going to end up selling for what? $12-15k?

Oh yeah and it comes with a signed poster.

I don't know. I understand it's for charity and all that but I would have thought the hardware would be top notch, you know?

I saw it. You have to send a note to them and fill out a form for permission to bid. I did...and by the time I was authorized, the price went up considerably. I am still watching, though.

The only thing special about this laptop is that it has the logo underneath "Acer" on the support arm. This is an Aspire R7 which will be available to consumers, sans logo.

@autotechinstl: Why would it be? It's a charity event. Very few people bidding on this item actually care about using it. Whoever wins (haha) this will probably never turn it on. It'll sit in a collectors box. These people know they aren't paying for an item. It's a contest to see who has the biggest checkbook and whos willing to spend the most to win. The winner gets recognition and lots of gratitude for their donation, the laptop is just an added bonus.

The good thing about this auction, unlike many others is that the proceeds go to charity (reputable ones at that)

@nmchapma: To add to my previous comment, they also won't up the specs on this because this charity event is a marketing ploy as well. They don't want to over do it on this and disappoint the rest of us when the actual product hits the market. They want to make us want it as it's made, not go in expecting more.

I didn't see the star trek version, but I saw the non badged one. The trackpad seems like it is very awkward to use. They may as well not even included it.

You'll be reaching over the keyboard to use the mouse. Sometimes in games if I just have a trackpad, I'll let my thumb hang down, so I can still mouse around with fingers on keys. That isn't possible on this system. Hell, the one way they show the screen in use, the trackpad is 100% covered.
