Agreed, this is ludicrous. I'm tired of seeing laptop batteries that aren't actual deals, but just meaningless ad-spam. There has to be a way to block the target sites, or we are going to lose our faith in the community deals feed. If a site is so willing to build bots for deals.woot, I wouldn't want to trust them with my online purchase, that's for damned sure!

vote-for2vote-against

I was thinking this as well. I think I went through 3 or 4 pages of laptop batteries before I gave up. That is plain silly.

Outrageous

how about we are only allowed to post 2-3 deals a day or something. That would help

Of course, they would probably just get more ID's and then we would have even more id's to report.

What time do the woot people wake up so they can take care of this junk?

@containerofmilk: Try 10 at this point...but yeah. 10 freakin pages of laptop batteries....

They do block them as soon as they can get to it. However these spammers happen to hit when staff is not available readily to deal with the situation.

Ths fresh tab has so manny spams I gave up looking for a real deal today.

11 pages of spam!!! Is this a record????

I found four posters posting this junk.

tattle tattle tattle !!
Report them as spam via the tattle button?

vote-for3vote-against

southdakota is right I hope folks are tattling on this stuff. Just copy the link of the member and then tattle on one deal. This will totally help staff out.

vote-for3vote-against

@southdakota: That'll be a LOT of tattling this morning. Any one know if the staff has a way of deleting these deals en masse? What a PITA it will be to delete them one by one.

Any one feel like writing a love letter to these idiots? info@battery-of-laptop.com I get the feeling English is not their primary language.
And they have a hotline! 1 (347) 789-7199
Googling that number leads to these folks and others: http://www.everpowerindustry.com/about_us.htm

@lavikinga: didn't someone learn the spelling for one of those bad words in chinese? If you just go to the user name copy the link then click on one deal and tattle it is sufficient. Yes it means doing this for every user who has posted spammy deals, But it works. Staff can delete enmasse that way.

yes, the solution is the folder system we're working on, not trying to stop entry into the system. steps after that include allowing you to build your own customized fresh tab.

vote-for3vote-against

@snapster: that doesn't stop them it only hides it from us. I still hope Woot is going to be diligent in taking care of that stuff because otherwise it is going to make the site look awfully crappy.

vote-for2vote-against

@hobbit: right, I don't want to stop retailers uploading entire catalogs - the system should handle it fine.

vote-for5vote-against

@snapster: legit retailers are cool, but you want to encourage this sort of junk too? I am being serious here not trying to argue. If I was a new member and didn't have anything in place to hide all that junk and went to the fresh page and all of that stuff was still allowed I would be so turned off I wouldn't want to return. Maybe because I am older and newer technology and such takes me a while to sort out but I know I wouldn't be interested in setting up something to filter out the unknown spammers and I use spammer here not legit retailers. I totally support legit retailers posting legit deals.

vote-for2vote-against

@hobbit: the folder system should fix it to a level where spammers with intent to spam will be far more clear and separated from the good retailers uploading their specials. after that, the future custom deal tabs should also help reduce reliance on the fresh tab.

my main point is that some of the current 'the sky is falling' reports can at least be tempered by the hope that long term this will be less of an issue due to site features in development.

@lavikinga: An article on "Chinglish" in the New York Times you might enjoy (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/03/world/asia/03chinglish.html). Be sure to check out the slide show.

@heymo: Chinglish is akin to Spanglish. Both ar good for a giggle. When I head to Miami to visit my husband's enormous extended family, I have to bite my tongue to keep from laughing. The older folks spend more time speaking their native tongue, so when they switch to English to speak with me, the conversations can get "creative." One aunt had lovingly translated a family recipe for me. Didn't really read it over until I got home. Never could figure out if "oven dust" was baking powder or baking soda.
