I am going to open the shades and use the sunlight instead of turning on the lights. At least until it starts to get dark outside.
Turn off the fans when leaving the computer at dinner time, no need to leave them running when I'm not there.
And make this post in case someone didn't know it was Earth Day.

Happy Earth Day!

I plan on emptying a couple of cans of freon, turning on all the lights and take my jeep four wheeling.

(not really big on the green movement).

I'm going to get really stoned and go for a hike!

@dreamaster: You are the lemur who is fond of starting fires over on woot.

Lemming - I am a LEMMING.

And yes, fires, explosions, mass destruction, Earth doom, Orbital satellite Bombardment - Just some of my small but amusing foibles.

I'm NOT going to buy gas... I wish my vehicle was solar powered!

@faughtey: Normally I'd be asleep by now, or at least away from the computer, but here it is, past midnight (just), and I'm wide awake. I actually have incandescent 60 watt bulbs stockpiled (I've mentioned this before) with the expectation that I have enough for the next thirty years. I dislike the light given by either the LED or hideous florescents, and they're no more ecologically sound than using corn to make ethanol (it takes more energy to make ethanol out of corn that the ethanol produced can give).

What am I doing that's unusual? I'll be planting some gerber daisies (one of my mother's favorites), and continuing to ready the garden beds for spring planting. I practice the more attractive look of a french country garden, with food plants and flowers all mixed together. Very pretty, and very practical. I've always recycled. I don't use anything disposable unless it's completely unavoidable. Often I just do without.

I use rags, and a dust mop, instead of those horrible swiffer things. I love my little shark vacuum, since it means that I don't have to throw away vacuum bags when they're full (although I only have carpet on the stairs, and area rugs, so there isn't much vacuuming). I use organic fertilizers (Dr Earth), and most of the plants I grow are heirloom plants (they taste better).

You always come up with such interesting and thought-provoking questions. I will probably return to this tomorrow morning.

burning some hippies in the back yard, other than that, no.

I helped my eldest daughter plant flowers and such yesterday at her school, since they knew it was going to be icky weather today. Just hope all the transplants survive.

@faughtey: Thanks, I did not know. I will go to the beach instead of wasting electricity on vacuuming.

@shrdlu: So I let the light bulb thing go before. I admit some of the "hideous fluorescents" do take a bit to warm up. Some do not. We have several the 2nd one took a while to warm up so I placed this in my man cave\computer room. I like that the first thing in the morning I see is not a god awful bright light of incandescent. I bought my first on for a stair light that is very unsafe to change. I paid soooo much more for it but still do not need to change it. Try one.
As for the light I have purchased incandescent bulbs that have a "more natural light" that remind me of the LED. I only have 1 LED light in the house so far.
@faughtey: I will have a candle lit dinner with my wife.

@caffeine_dude: Most important first; candlelight dinner +++

You apparently do not suffer from SAD, and you may also live where there is no winter. You are telling me that you are perfectly comfortable with florescents and LED lights, and that's fine. You get to make that choice; just not for me. My original point is the same. I'm not interested in law makers making this choice for me. I've insulated myself against this. It's earth day, and it's Faughtey's post, and if you want to discuss it further, make a new question, and just post a link to it from here. Happy to disagree with you at length, but elsewhere.

Once I'm a bit more awake, I have other suggestions on how to conserve (mostly fun ones).

I have to work today, just like any other, but my company is very committed to being Green. We get all of our electricity from a wind farm and we recycle tons every year. There are other things we do every day, but I'll run out of characters if I try to list them all. It's good to be part of a group effort. We can do so much more together than if we are just one person alone.

I'm going on a hike! And I rode my bike to class today instead of driving :D.

Also: touching on the light bulb thing - I prefer incandescents in lamps and desk lighting, it's a little late for me to stockpile them though :C - And I'll be okay with the bright and warm fluorescents in ceiling fixtures.

@shrdlu: I have not been diagnosed as having SAD but I have installed grow lights in my house, FYI it drives the cops nuts they want to see what is under the grow light soooo bad when they come in my house. : ) . Not having a choice is not that bad I can not go around burning my trash in town. We will dual later, should be fun, but only do it if it is fun.

mock people who celebrate earth day.

Wedit. to add: 'cause they rock all groovy like! ;)

I plan to begin stockpiling incandescent bulbs for resale at led/fluorescent prices down the road. MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
