I think the preferred firmwares are VEGAn-tab and Cyanogen. I don't have a Gtab, but I do run Cyanogen on my phone. They seem to update it with stable releases consistently, often more quickly than the manufacturer. There's a vibrant community as well, but it can vary by device. Heck, Samsung recently gifted new phones to some Cyanogen developers to encourage their efforts.

i have cyanogen on my wifes Gtablet and its great. runs smooth and fast. plus its gingerbread which vegan is lacking as are others like TNTlite. but those three are the most popular.

I just bought into the android tab world with a gtablet - Brand new to all of this, and really just doing it as an experiment to see how well I like it. However, I've not yet rooted my tablet.

One of the main reasons people have decided to mod their tabs, it seems, is because Tap'n'tap, Viewsonic's chosen proprietary skin on top of the base Android OS, is a total beast. However, many of the major issues were addressed in the most recent Over-The-Air updates. There are still a few quirks, and the keyboard is one of the least actually intuitive/usable I've encountered. THat said, I'm anxious to give CyanogenMod a shot in a little while.

@jcarrigan: *note: vegan tab does have a stable gingerbread release out now

I tried Vegan but had a lot more problems getting it on than expected from all the posts saying how easy it was. I'm going to give cyanogen a try instead.

the VGT i bought on woot! is now rooted w/ cyanogen. it works MUCH better than the original - faster, more responsive. however, i still really, really like the ipad 1 i've had for 7 months.

in fact, my dual-core e8400 desktop crashed 2 weeks ago and i haven't even fixed it yet. i've been perfectly happy w/ the ipad and the apple bluetooth keyboard. it does just about everything i need.

i think the tablet world still belons to apple. tho' other makers don't relish the thought, they're still be playing ketchup 'til their product cuts the mustard (and my condiments to steve jobs).

So where does one get a custom rom? I'm a little confused on that

Google XDA or slatedroid. I know XDA has a excellent blog on the Veiwsonic tablet which covers rooting new Roms and how to recover from almost a bricked tablet.

I've had mine since firtst Woot offering. I've been running Brilliant Corners 1.3.0 and couldn't be happier.
