questionsare hard drive prices coming back down to earth?

not in my opinion. Most of the "deals" on externals are for 1TB at around $80-$100, and $110-$125 for 2TB. That's what I've been seeing for externals for several months now. Occasional $65 for 1TB, but they're sold out right away.

@kamikazeken: For 5 drives, I can live with paying an extra $100-150, but if they come down to $60 for a 2TB drive, which is the direction the prices were headed before the prices went up, I'd be pretty ticked that I overpaid by a good $300. I'm not going to wait 2 years though to buy if that's how long it's going to take for the prices to come back down.

Absolutely not, prices are still astronomically high.

Here's a good way to see the historical trending of prices on a part by part basis:

Select the drive you're interested in and you'll see a price history chart.

It looks like we still have a long way to go before we get back to the low price levels pre-flood.

I figure it'll be 2013 before prices are really near where they were last summer.

Seagate and WD have already put out press releases that they will be unable to get back up to pre-flood production rates until the end of 2013, beginning of 2014.

You'll probably see a short term additional increase mid 2012 when the new plants come online, simply because vendors will be able to make some extra money. Then after a few months, prices will start to come down, but I wouldn't expect to be able to get the good quality 2TB drive (like the Samsung or Hitachi) for $55 again until the 2013 holiday season sales :(:( That really sucks because I need another 10-16TB of storage right now, but will NOT pay the current prices...

I really wanted to upgrade my drobo to 3TB stacks, instead of 2TB. Now, that is impossible to do, affordably. I don't think they'll be coming down, personally. I plan on buying a rack for my extra 6 1TB drives and just fill those on mirrored RAID...won't last me long, but it's something during these hard times...

Hopefully the new factories they're building are employing newer technology and will pump out higher capacity drives.

From today over at /.
http://hardware.slashdot.org/story/12/02/08/0532202/hdd-price-update-how-the-thai-floods-have-affected-prices-3-months-later

Short version: they are come down from the highs in Nov-Dec, but are still considerably higher than they were in the pre flood period. It will be 6 months or more before prices return to the pre-flood levels.

Note: I hate the flood. They are very ugly and smell. I keep using up all my ammo on the infection forms and the brains of the combat forms stain my armor when I blast them with the shotty.

Might try going to Costo and geting the 3TB Seagate GoFlex Desk. Its now running $130 for them. Take out the hard drive and use them in your tower! I tried this and it works great. Their 2TB version (Less a Platter) is going for $110. Depends on how selective you are on manufacturers. I find most are on the same par. For Tower Raid I do like the WD Caviar Blacks but their prices are in the stratosphere.
