Where can I order an AC filter?
I've heard you should replace the filter yearly, but can't find anybody looking to sell one. It's a GE window 5500 BTU unit model# AST05LKS1

If it's just the regular thin foam stuff, you should be able to get it at your local hardware store.
If it is the corrugated looking ones (like they use on central AC systems), you should still be able to find it at the hardware store, but make sure you either know the size or bring it with you.
A quick search shows me you have almost the same AC as we do. Here is one site I found: http://www.appliancepartspros.com/Appliance-Parts/ge-air-filter-item-number-ap3995886.aspx
The filter is very specific to the model of the AC and can't be bought at the local hardware store. (Wish I had known that when we bought the darn thing! :-/ )
Edit: Looks like Sears carries them too... http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/GE-Parts/Room-air-conditioner-Parts/Model-AST05LKS1/0432/0904032/G0612028/00001?blt=06&prst=&shdMod=
No matter where you find it, do yourself a favor and buy several at a time.
Is the filter that plasticy stuff, or foam? If the plastic stuff, don't replace it... Just wash it. In my, limited, experience, filters unique to the unit are typically washable.
Btw, sometimes there is both plasticy and foam. Pick up the foam at any hardware store, as mentioned. Again, the plastic need only be washed.
I tried washing it and it seems pretty restored. Thanks everyone!
