I look for auto off, a super long cord, a coated surface, a wide range in temperatures, spray and steam buttons, tank window and a known brand that I can afford...

good luck and happy hunting....be sure and post the "good deal" if you find it...

After reading the Consumer Reports articles, I ended up getting this one:
T-Fal Ultraglide Easycord Iron
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0026ILY0E
It wasn't #1 on Consumer Reports' list, but it was the highest ranked that still had good user reviews on Amazon.

• $37.39 - $37.99 (depending on color)
• 9-foot cord
• non-stick soleplate
• easy-fill, 9-oz water tank
• automatic shut-off function
• limited lifetime warranty

It's been great for me for ironing, and apparently it can be used as a upright steamer also. I've been wanting to steam the wrinkles out of my fabric shower curtain, but it simply isn't high enough on my to-do list, so I can't comment there.

I was really excited for the "easy cord system with telescopic cord that keeps the cord out of the way when ironing and retracts into the iron for easy storage," but mine does not recoil into the iron. I'm wondering if that was an old feature that isn't in the later models. :(
