"Woot!" is a phrase that Urban Dictionary (which we all know is a reputable source) describes as "An interjection similar to "YAYE!" or "Woohoo!" used to express joy or excitement, usually about some kind of accomplishment."

It is my personal belief that Woot! wants us to get excited about the deal of the day and to react in this way.

@kamikazeken: It's "whoop" there it is.

And "w00t" is an exclamation used by gaming nerds since the 80's. Unsure of origin. So, seeing the deal, one might say "yay" or "woot" or "woah". They just chose one.

@jnet9102: I believe you're right about the source.

I've also seen it claimed that those '80s gaming nerds coined "woot" as an acronym for "we owned the other team", but I've never seen anybody offer actual evidence for that piece of folk etymology. (Did team-based play even exist in the '80s?) My guess is that it was just an odd exclamation and the purported explanation is a later backronym.

From that article:

"If you're at all familiar with internet culture, you'll know that "woot" is also an expression of excitement, sometimes spelled "w00t." According to Matt Rutledge, Founder/CEO of Woot.com, that is where the company got its name"

Yay! I was right. Go me!

I always thought it stood for "Want One Of Those" or "Want One Of This" ... but as some people frequent the site, it could possibly stand for "Wallet Out Of Transactions"

@jnet9102: @kamikazeken is thinking of the right song. You're thinking of Tag Team.

Going back to hacker roots, when a hacker gets to the brains of a unix system, or the Root, that was the l33t$p3@k exclamation of victory. i.e I got to the root!

I agree that the origin seems to stem from the gaming community. If anyone has played Counter-Strike for more than 5 minutes, you have no doubt seen expressions like "w00t, we pwned those n00bs!!"
