A Sofa Table?
Find em @ Ikea, or even on Overstock.com

Ok... I now know what it is called! Thanks!

But $100? Man alive... and that's on the cheap end. I just need something to put my drinks down on while i'm on the couch.

The thing won't even be seen! Maybe i'll just make my own.

I call mine Bob, but you can name yours whatever you want. In the store, the just call them sofa tables, like the others have said.

honestly, I always called it a table that goes behind a couch

You didn't give details on what style you are looking for, but I found a variety here:

That was my initial reaction as well, except in my head the punchline was, "anything but late for dinner!"

Why does my brain hurt?

I was really hoping you were going to be telling a joke.

But yeah, like others said, couch or sofa table.

You could get some little Ikea end tables or something. I've got this one next to my office desk, to hold the printer:

Or you could do TV trays. Just gotta be careful not to knock them over (and for that reason, I don't know if they'd be useful for your purposes).

The first apartment I lived in, we just used the packing boxes.

@flyinggirl: Ditto, but in my second place. First one, my roommate had a little coffee table. I've actually still got a giant speaker box acting as a corner table in my living room now. It's worked quite well so far (and it's the biggest reason I don't have a real table in the corner there)

@rookie3001: Build your own table from a free pattern at www.ana-white.com I love her patterns (super easy to follow) and the price is right. That's what I do.

@rookie3001: look for a small or thin end table, like the ikea end table that @khellendros1984 posted
you could also look for something called a "snack table" which would swoop over the couch seat for your drinks or snacks. it's low profile

When I was a kid, we called the one in the basement "the blue table" mostly because when I was really, really young, my father had painted it blue.

At my old apartment, I used a couple of shallow bookcases that were basically the height of the back of the couch (two side by side, each about half the width of the couch). A nice side effect was that the shelves of the bookcases provided hidden storage, (relatively) easily accessible by moving the couch. I think they each cost about $30.

We inherited one of these tables, but it wasn't behind a couch when we saw it in the original floor plan. It was against the wall by itself, and had various knick-knacks on it. Reminded me a bit of an altar. Naturally, when described in context above, it makes perfect sense.

I called mine 4 cinder blocks and a wood plank. Wow, you must be livin' large as a bachelor!

@smasumur: Thanks for the great link! I really like their "Make Two Challenge". That's a great idea.
