I got the UPEK TrueMe USB fingerprint reader. Has anyone had any luck with XP?
I got the UPEK TrueMe USB fingerprint reader. From this deal. I will want to make it work on XP. (Windows 7 found the driver no problem.)

I have found a driver that works. The device is now called TouchCHip Fingerprint Coprocessor in the Device Manager.

Has anyone found any free software?
I have a Dell D620, and dell has free software for built in fingerprint readers.

The software knows it is not the right reader but let me us it to log into windows. I enabled the TPM in the bios but the software knows that it is not native hardware. The windows fingerprint logon did work.
edit Seriously, I ask a question about an item posted here, and I am helping the community (I hope) and I get down voted?
Double edit Thanks for the upvote.
Ok I think I got it. DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE DELL THING.

I will do a system restore and test this without the unsuccessful attempts, giving a decent test environment.
So here is what I did to make it work on XP.
Do not plug in the fingerprint reader yet.
Download Protector Suite QL 5.6 Software from here: http://download.cnet.com/Protector-Suite-QL-5-6-Software-X86-zip/3000-2110_4-163837.html
Unzip.
Read the readme's know problems (Norton users)
Run the Setup.exe
Reboot when prompted.
Plug in the FP reader. (That first driver is not needed) Protector Suite has it.)
Run Protector Suite's Control Center
Pick Fingerprints
Initialize
Accept licence agreement
Enroll
Play with settings.
When finished write your password down, after using a fingerprint reader for a year you may just forget it.
edit I would have been finished sooner too if it weren't for my meddling kids and there homework.
Enjoy.
I truly did not want this to be a one man question, I hoped for a bit of assistance, not that I am disappointed, I am just explaining all my post.
I stand by my instructions above, and hope someone else can use this information, it did not come easy. The software did not have any ratings on download.com so I ignored it the first time I saw it.
Any question please feel free to post. I will try to check back from time to time.
Part numbers and company names: UPEK is now AuthenTec the Biometrics Fingerprint USB Scanner has TrueMe on it and a model number m/n TCRE3C. It works with other fingerprint scanning.
Nice work. Saved me hours I'm sure.
Thank You.
@mreliphaz: Thanks for your reply! I started to think I was talking to myself.
Thanks for all the work you put into this, much appreciated!
