questionshave you ever had a deal get removed from top…

I noticed it on a Qdoba BOGO deal last week. The deal went popular and stayed on the popular flow for hours and then it was gone. It wasn't deleted and it was still accessible but it was no longer on the front page. I figured it was because the community was having fun and suggesting words for the fill in the blank (they were not SFW).

vote-for7vote-against

The free tag might be the cause.

vote-for5vote-against

@eviloverlord333: Interesting. So in this case, it was probably a staff-related removal.

I noted that a woot staff member did change my deal's title, removing "FREE" and adding it to the tags, around the same time that it got removed from the top ranked deals flow. Is it possible that "free" deals don't belong on the popular flow, or top ranked flow?

Furthermore, does my Lego deal show up for you guys on the front page, or is it invisible to everyone (not just me)?

vote-for6vote-against

Yep, looks like it got killed by the dreaded "F" word... :-/ A little light reading on the subject: http://deals.woot.com/questions/details/c2b538ac-5bcb-4f93-93e7-7e70ecaf5741/what-are-the-rules-for-tags#1eb80d26-ca01-4ddc-99b7-9910548ba9ab

Things may have changed since then... I can't keep up anymore. (nor do I try)

To answer your question, I can see it on the "fresh" tab or the Top tab IF I click "day"...but not on the Top tab for current rank or popular flow.

vote-for7vote-against

No sign of it for me on the top deals page, althought it's better voted than most of the others. It shows up on page 3 of fresh though; I voted for it a while ago.

@jumbowoot: is there a reason the top deals tab is excluding certain things now? This is the second question in a few days that hinted at this practice. Or has it always been this way and we were just oblivious to it?

vote-for6vote-against

@jimeezlady: Ok, I'm with you on that one. Wasn't aware of this until now, so thanks :)

But now, my question is:

Are all "#free" deals supposed to be removed from popular flow, or did I just get punished for inadvertently putting the "FREE" notice in the deal title instead of the tag?

vote-for5vote-against

@dmaz: Same thing happened yesterday to the bloomin onion deal I added (it was a dupe that I missed because it wasnt on the top page). Had 20 votes on the first page of fresh, but I couldnt see it on the front. It also was caused by having the free tag.

vote-for15vote-against

@lichme, @okham:

Thanks for the feedback guys :) Good to know, for future reference.

Now I just wonder what the point is in adding free deals, if woot staff is just going to remove them? These are some of the most popular and most-made-use-of deals, don't you think?

vote-for12vote-against

It bothers me when a valid question like this is posted and no mod bothers to answer. This is information many of us would like to know, and instead of us speculating it would seem reasonable that someone with the answer would at least acknowledge the question....

vote-for7vote-against

@tarasadies: Be assured we're not ignoring questions, but sometimes they do take a bit of time to research, so we appreciate everyone's patience.

vote-for7vote-against

@inkycatz: Ah, acknowledgement!

Thank you, I look forward to seeing the definitive answer to the question.

vote-for7vote-against

And you're back on the top page, minus one "free" tag.

vote-for4vote-against

Now the Popular tab is broken.

vote-for5vote-against

Wasn't there discussion at one point of having a tab solely for free items? Not free shipping, but just for free items.

vote-for12vote-against

@inkycatz: It appears the tag 'lingerie' prevents the deal from reaching TOP and popular. Will this also be true for 'free'?

It would really be helpful if the Gods O' Woot would provide a list of blackballed tags.

vote-for5vote-against

@ohcheri: I think the tag "¡Viva la Revolución!" will also prevent Top/Popular status. :p

vote-for8vote-against

As far as I can tell it is the "Free" tag. I posted the Bloomin' Onion deal, it had around 25 (a guess) votes w/i 15 minutes. I looked at it 6, 7 minutes later & it was not in the Top tab and had the Free tag added.

I tattled on it & requested it's removal. Not done. @inkycatz responded to my comment to remove it and did. (Thanks again, inky!). By then it had floated into oblivion. The bloomin' onion deal from the previous week had over 150 votes. This one 35.

My suggestion - please stop adding the Free tag to deals. Why in the world should they be taken out of the popular, top, etc. tabs just because they're free? Nonsense.

The tag controversy, rules (?) & lack of consistency is taking the fun out of posting deals.

vote-for7vote-against

@ohcheri: I just now read your recent questions on roughly, the same topic, but different situation:

http://deals.woot.com/questions/details/e086b933-bd7c-4649-8d9a-e8dbd69dfcc3/is-there-a-list-of-tags-that-will-kill-a-deal#22

What is a little disconcerting is that you gave an honest request for the tags that the staff members set to "kill" the deal, and you didn't receive one response from them. Bless the dedicated veterans of our community, they know who they are, who do consistently provide useful and beneficial feedback, though.

But regarding our moderators, why do they have time to tediously change all of our deal names and tags, but yet can't answer a simple question so that we can post deals for them more effectively?

I'm not really torqued about it, just feels a little crusty

vote-for6vote-against

@dmaz: Agreed. I don't understand why they have to do all these "secret" changes when the effects are so clear and obvious. Just tell us the truth...we're going to figure it out pretty quickly anyway and being devious about these changes just creates ugly feelings.

vote-for4vote-against

@dmaz: "But regarding our moderators, why do they have time to tediously change all of our deal names and tags, but yet can't answer a simple question so that we can post deals for them more effectively?"

It might be because the mods you see over here are specifically community mods. We're talky and noisy and most inclined to destroy your dreams and shatter your soul how we know best. Sometimes (all the time) that means we're the ones that change tags over here in ATC. That's why we're here.

When folks ask about deals (why is this gone? why did those tags change? WHO MUST BURN?), we may know what happened, or we may need to investigate. And it does often take a bit of footwork and time. The team is much bigger than you think, I suspect! :)

vote-for4vote-against

@inkycatz: "...destroy your dreams and shatter your soul.." shudder I suspected that was part of your job description. ::deep sigh:: DO know that you have to research at times. Agree w/@dmaz about the lack of answers. Not pointing my finger at you. At all. YOU do answer when queried. Others don't. So often the question is never answered. That means we (the posters/questioners) do not have consistent guidelines/rules. Without guidelines, we flounder. (Please do not toss me a fish, okay?)

Re: "The team is much bigger than you think, I suspect!" Am taking that to mean you have more than the 10 employees that Tanga claims to have. ;-)

vote-for6vote-against

I posted a deal this afternoon and did not include the free tag. But now it has a free tag. I guess a mod saw it and added it. So there is no chance that it will be a top deal now.

Maybe you need a Free tab for free deals. They are getting buried in the fresh tab, which is sad, because there are some great free deals out there that won't get seen because of it.

vote-for3vote-against

I'd like to add a vote for a Free tab, especially if the Top tab now excludes deals tagged with "free."

Personally, I really don't care why the free and lingerie tags might (or might not) keep a deal from hitting the Top tab.

However, my first guess is that, at least in the case of the lingerie deals, there are a (very) few squeaky wheels that make a disproportionately loud noise about the presence of these deals. (This may also apply to free deals, or the reason for excluding free deals may simply be a lack of commission, since any percentage of $0 is $0.)

Regardless, if the issue is that woot is only getting squeaks from these few complainers, perhaps those who want to see the lingerie deals, as well as those who don't NOT want to see those deals should be speaking up more, if only to balance that (likely small) minority who think censorship is a good thing.

vote-for2vote-against

But...I love free stuff? How could you hide it from me ? How? :::shuffles off sniffling:::

vote-for2vote-against

@gmwhit: In addition to your last post, I just want to add that not only do some other mods not respond, some will respond with the polar opposite of what another mod says in another thread, or basically answer saying "It doesn't matter".

The lack of consistency is driving me away very quickly.

vote-for3vote-against

@jezebelseven: SO agree w/you. Sad really. It would be so simple to just say: "Blah, blah - here are the rules/guidelines." Instead many questions are ignored. (Watch, some wiseguy is going to "Blah, blah me." ;-)

I grow weary of reading/asking valid questions that are NEVER answered.

vote-for3vote-against

Still working on this. As always, your patience is vastly appreciated. (True story, I'm not a subject matter expert on this particular topic, but I do want to help out if I can!)

vote-for2vote-against

So.
Final update from me: Your update on this will most likely appear from @shawnmiller @jumbowoot and @gatzby (but not me, it's just escalated upward).
