any that doesn't have italian captains.

In all seriousness, though, it depends on your definition of "best". price, service, activities, demographics of other passengers, how new are their ships, etc.

I suggest a full-service cruise specialist to help you book a cruise if it's only your first or second time cruising.

I've been on Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Princess. Of those three, I liked Royal Caribbean the best. I've had some issues with Carnival in the past, not with the ship or the staff, they've always been great. Most of the issues stem from inconsiderate people who think they are the only ones on the ship and common courtesy doesn't apply to them. This happens on all cruise lines, but I've had it happen more so on Carnival. I don't mean to come across as a prude or anything, I'm far from it, I love to have a good time like anyone else, but what I'm talking about is people pushing or cutting in front of you because they don't want to wait like everyone else or people being rude to the staff for no reason other than they are on a big trip and feel like they can be.

Having said all that, we've stopped cruising and started going to all inclusives.

I've only been on a cruise once, and it was with Royal Caribbean. I would swear by them, staff was courteous and it was always clean. The food was beyond amazing... I would go on another cruise with them simply for that fact.

I also have only been on one cruise and it was Royal Caribbean. They were amazing! The staff was friendly and the food was good. The rooms weren't bad either, although I wasn't expecting them to be as small as they were. They're more kid friendly than other cruise lines (besides Disney, but I've heard bad things about Disney's cruises).

Best time to go for a week-long cruise? I went during the winter because it was cheap and still warm (we went to the Bahamas). :)

carnival is the Walmart of cruise lines, IMO. You can get a great deal, and have a great time, but don't expect luxury or special treatment.

@kamikazeken: Thank you! That's exactly what I was trying to get at without saying that exactly, lol. Seems there is a price point where you filter out the riff raff. Carnival has their place in the cruise industry, I mean everyone should go on a cruise at some point, it's a blast. But if you can afford a little more, go Royal Caribbean.

if you do want to save a few bucks on your cruise, empty a bunch of shampoo bottles, clean, and fill with alcohol. You are not allowed to bring your own, and it can get expensive onboard. 1 bottle of your own in a shampoo bottle can easily save you $100+.

The reason I suggested (in the first answer) a full service cruse specialist to book your cruise is because they will get to know what you and your family like and use that knowledge to book you the cruise you should enjoy the most.

In addition to RC, Holland America is also very good.

When you say "best", I guess the luxury lines - Silverseas, Raddison, and a few more that do not come to mind at the moment - would meet the criteria for a lot of people. Personally, I would not even want to go on one of them due to the formality involved. However, I know people who would avoid the lesser priced lines due to the crowds, the need to pay for liquor, the lack of formality, truly great service, etc. I have been on Royal Caribbean, and it suits me fine.

I've sailed Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian, and a Chinese river cruise company. The river cruise in China was best, there were only a hundred passengers so we and the crew all got to know one another. For the big cruise lines, We've sailed several times with both Carnival and RCL and liked them, although we loved Carnival Conquest, but not the smaller boat we sailed with them, Triumph?. We have only sailed with Norwegian once, but there was a long list of things that impaired our enjoyment. I will not sail with them again. If you want to save money rather than shopping for the perfect cruise through a cruise specialist, I highly recommend cruisecompete.com. Go to the cruise line web site, select your date, port, boat, cabin type, etc and post it at cruisecompete.com. Travel agents bid to give up part of their commission for your sale. If they can't give you a discount (some cruise lines forbid it) they get you an on board credit or cabin upgrade.

I have had the most fun on carnival, its def for the party and the longer cruises have the real nice boats, i think the food is the best and the service is always great, no complaints at all

I've only been on one cruise, so I don't have anything to compare it to, but we went on Princess to Alaska and had a blast. The crew was great, food was way too tasty, and we had a lot of fun. We didn't really run into any obnoxious cruise guests and there was a nice age range (young families, young singles, middle age people, old folks, etc.) so we didn't feel out of place. I agree that you might want to talk to a consultant or do a lot of research to make sure you find the atmosphere you're looking for.
