How do they decide what tags your question has?
The past two questions I posted had the tags I gave them somehow edited. Is there a list of all acceptable tags somewhere and a Woot employee has to decide which apply to each question? Are the tags changed by other site members? If so, what's the point of entering tags if they will just be changed?
At the time of posting my tags are: Question, tags
I guess we'll see what happens.
Well, I can see why they removed the "question" tag - it's completely redundant. You're in the questions forum.
As to why the custom tags are removed from so many questions, I have no idea. It would be nice if some of the more general ones were left so that searching past questions was easier.
We use tags for SEO (Search Engine Optimization). We're working on being more consistent in tagging questions (and deals) to aid in searches.
For the Deals side, they use tags that match the high-level categories you see at most large online retail sites: clothing, shoes, jewelry, baby, electronics, video-games, etc. Note that two-word tags are connected via a hyphen such as home-improvement.
Ask the Community
The same tags noted above are used in AtC when products are discussed such as requests for product suggestions.
In addition, there are other tags that are commonly used such:
Holidays: christmas, new-years, thanksgiving
General Interest: parenting, health, relationships, food, restaurants, music & many more.
Chat is used with the tag isn't really related to a deal or product. That is, a question that spawns general discussion.
Meta is used for anything that involves Woot! or any of its sites, features, suggestions, ordering, shipping, etc.
@thumperchick It was a question about posting a question so I thought it was justified. You do make a valid point though. In the case of my other questions, they were not redundant. It's weird how they select tags for you... I don't even really know what meta means.
@thunderthighs thanks for the info. Although, it would look better if I had been 2 seconds faster and my last comment had appeared before yours. Just curious, do you actually work for woot? Is there somewhere to find out which users are actually woot employes?
@gopvifootball: That little yellow square next to their name means they're woot staff. It should also say "Staff" when you hover over their name.
@gopvifootball: Yep, I'm staff as @lordebon noted by my pretty yellow box. I'm a forum moderator. I prowl around the forums on the retail side and here. Chat with people, clean things up, etc.
I wondered this too. Sometimes I get exactly what I tag, other times it's completely changed.
I try to tag keywords that involve my item/question and the name brand. If it's media I also put the type as a tag also. DVD, Blu Ray, PS3, Xbox, etc...
