Personal favorite is probably U2, but I've got to credit 50 years of rock and roll from the Rolling Stones.

U2. But also maybe Radiohead and Muse. We'll have to see how much longevity they have though.

It's hard not to list The Beatles as number 1 considering the impact they had on music. And during my youth The Eagles had a similar influence. Lots of really good bands out there that deserve mention, but as far as being the greatest of all time, it would have to be The Beatles.

I can't name a single "greatest" rock group/musician, however among my top favorites in no particular order would be The Doors, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Cream, and The Kinks.

It is hard to list considering the variables involved, but going the route of music that holds up and stands the test of time; Led Zeppelin and Rolling Stones. Yes the Beatles were awesome and had more of an impact, but their overall catalog of music has some weird stuff that just hold me back a little from saying "best band ever".

I agree about pop vs R&R, while the Beatles could arguably be the #1 pop band I'd have to go with Led Zeppelin with the current nod going to AC/DC!
Of course I wouldn't argue with The Doors, Rolling Stones, The Who, Cream, etc.

Mainstream Rock - Bruce Springsteen & The E-Street Band

It depends. Rock & Roll Band-wise, including longevity, no question it's The Rolling Stones. Now if you are looking for the greatest Pop Rock, "Boy-Band sensation" nobody is in the same universe as The Beatles.

@chezteladog: Sorry, but when I hear "Grateful Dead" I don't think "Greatest rock band ever." I tend to think "Oh yeah, that band that stoner rockers never shut up about."
