I think this question depends on the age of the gamer. For me retro was SNES so...

Retro/arcade - galaga

Are we really 10 comments in and there's no love for Mario?
I love the first three Mario Bros, but Super Mario World is my jam! Love that game!

The best part about all of the Mario games is how unique each one is. Other than the characters there all so different - the gameplay, goals, styles, etc. So much fun!

Ms. Pacman hands down if we're talking favorite arcade cabinet game. If we're talking at home game, then it's a tie between Mario and Legend of Zelda.

Asteroids. I loved just spinning the little ship + randomly shooting things and/or shooting across the screen.

I loved Pitfall on the atari, had to have the perfect timing to jump over all those Crocs and loved swinging from a vine! At the actual Arcade I would have to Say Tempest! Loved that Game!

Frogger was my favorite classic arcade game.

Qix, xevious, galaga, spyhunter each took more money from me than I can remember. I'm planning on building a MAME cabinet this fall, assuming I can find the right monitor.

I still own an arcade. There are a couple of us left, but we are a dying breed. My answer would be Pengo. Its a little like Pac Man,but the strategy was way different.

Final Fantasy VII - spoiler alert I can still remember how shocked I was to see Sephiroth stab Aries from behind. Huge twist, never saw it coming.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project (NES)
Co-op brawlers just don't get any better than this.

Tempest. The original arcade version with the spinning knob thing.

Galaga. I used to love Galaxian, but Galaga FTW.
