I think that was suggested by someone and rejected because spammers can crack those captcha codes pretty easily. I posted a few articles a while back about how spammers go about doing it.

@hobbit: I'm still not sure I understand how the captchas are supposed to work. I ran across the first Math captcha the other day. Thank goodness it was a simple addition problem. These days, I'm lucky if I can remember how to solve for X.

@lavikinga: They use it a lot on facebook, especially when you are posting links or if you have posted too much in one day and you are supposed to type in the code some are super easy others aren't and some are just a pain in the hiney.
MySpace has the option that a member can require it before people can leave messages or commments, or other things. You know @catbertthegreat and @shrdlu can explain the math behind it I just know that I HATE IT.

@lavikinga: Captcha is supposed to introduce something random to prove that you are a human and not a robot entering information by script. It works but requires attention as new captcha methods are broken and need to be changed...it is a vicious cycle for sure.

@anotherhiggins: I had forgotten about that thread. Thank you for the reminder.
@hobbit: I followed the links you left in the other thread. I had no idea!

@lavikinga: It is crazy what people will spend time doing, I mean someone had to come up with all that code. It makes me sad that some folks are just that destructive. I realize I am very altruistic too about it all, I just don't get why folks waste their time on such endeavors.

@hobbit: There's a Math Captcha, gotta see one.

Edit: Okay those are no better. However someone posted the idea of using a word problem captcha, might work better, assuming the hacker doesn't have a network of fairly fluent english speakers, with a brain.

@catbertthegreat: I don't think I want to, it would make me cry. I would be hitting the give me another one button.

@hobbit: Okay no math captchas, let's not make hobbit cry.

Forgot the link for the idea for a word problem one: http://rubyquiz.com/quiz48.html

@catbertthegreat, @justafreak: Word problem, math problem - none of them will really work. I'll quote myself from that other thread....

@anotherhiggins said,
"I've actually read that some bots will strip the CAPTCHA image and repost it on one of several Pr0n-y sites they've set up.

A visitor to that site is then presented the CAPTCHA before being granted access to.... well, you know.

Then the bot feeds that answer back to the site that originally had the CAPTCHA.

That way the perpetrators don't need to worry about computing power or paying anyone/spending their own time."

Just add math skills and English fluency to the list of things that a spammer doesn't need to worry about having.

@hobbit said, "I just don't get why folks waste their time on such endeavors."

The problem is that they aren't wasting their time. They make money when idiots, er, I mean victims click on the spam links and provide personal information (it's probably a phishing scheme) or buy something.

@hobbit: I'm usually a Pollyanna, but the older I get, the more I am sure there is pure evil in the world. Just like there is earth, air, fire & water, I think there are two more elements: Good and Evil. After all, there are positives & negatives. Good and Evil are more of the same.

vote-for2vote-against

@lavikinga: I agree with you on good and evil. I have looked in the eyes of evil, and know it exists.

On the other hand, that earth air fire water stuff is not my thing, but I believe quite strongly in Hydrogen, Uranium, and the rest of the elemental table. After all, it's elementary, my dear LaVikinga.

vote-for2vote-against

@lavikinga: oh I know it exists, I just don't get why. But then again I also do not have the mentality to go out and shoot people randomly or even plan anything like that I am not wired that way I guess.

@lavikinga: She's an incorrigible punster. So don't incorrige her.
