Does Anyone Know What This Is Called (Tool/Clamp Question)?
Okay fellow Wooters, I need your help. Apparently, my web-fu is weak on this one.
I'm working on a project where I need a clamp type thing. Mounting something on the inside of a wooden shell that I will run a small strap through (Specifically, a strap for a snare drum wire).
I want to be able to loosen and tension it whenever needed. I have a large strap clamp that has exactly the type of thing I would want built into it. I've seen this sort of friction clamps used all over the place though. The strap fits under it, and the knurled "knuckle" can be flipped up and the strap won't move. Flip it down and the strap slides freely back and forth.
Close up shot of the specific part I'm talking about
While this isn't exactly what I need since it's not mountable, I don't even know what the heck to call that type of thing. I've searched friction, knuckle clamp, strap and all sorts of combinations.
Anyone have any
Just kinda glanced at your description but what you might be looking for is a type of small "come along" sort of winch. As soon as I can remember what it's called, I'll edit this.
I don't think it's actually considered a clamp per se, but it's more of a quick-release for a strap. I actually have one somewhere around here; let me trot out to the garage and look for it.
It looks like some sort of ratchet strap.
Search words that bring up something similar include "ratchet strap" (as @jsimsace suggested) and "adjustable band clamp".
maybe try "wire tightener" or "hand tightener"
Damn. This is one of those "right on the tip of my tongue" things.
Is it called a throw-off?
@lavikinga: you were right the first time. that is a part of a come-along also known as a wench.
also a ratchet strap could be that same part
I think you're looking for a cam clamp.
Maybe something like this?

@moosezilla: I think you might mean winch. A wench is something very different.
@moosezilla: A wench is a "come-with-me". A winch is a come-along. Just sayin'. :)
The tool pictured looks like a strap wrench. I don't know what you would call one that was permanently mounted.
Thanks for all the suggestions! I think the cam clamp is close and might be able to be modified to work like I described.
This is indeed one of those things where all sorts of words were really close to what I was looking for but not quite it.
I'm thinking of calling the company that makes the strap clamp in the picture I posted and asking them where they get the little parts there I took the picture of, the cam thingies.
I'd call it a Ratcheting Lever, but I've no clue where you could buy one! Something like this... http://www.ereplacementparts.com/ratcheting-lever-p-203906.html
I've heard them called pipe wrenches or strap wrenches.
The closest thing to what you're trying to buy would be in a band & web clamp kit like this one, I believe:

There's also something called a Vari-angle strap clamp, thingamajig, but it looks kind of bulky

If you google we clamp you get some pictures of people doing things similar to what you're trying to do, I think :)
Is it a cam buckle? I'll look for a picture.
Edit: Would any of these work? http://www.uscargocontrol.com/Tie-Downs-Hardware/Ratchet-Cam-Buckles
Cam-buckle is correct
@dmaz: Funny you posted that strap clamp, that's actually what the thing in my picture is, down to the exact model. I use it all the time. What I'm trying to find is what the little knurled piece that they use on that clamp to tighten down the strap itself. I just happened to have that one here. I've seen them used on strapping in everything from movers straps to backpacks to tools and hardware. You've given me an idea though to call webbing manufacturers!
@missellienc: That buckle is pretty much what I'm looking for. I might even be able to make one of those work. Thanks for finding that!!
@bingo969: You're very welcome. I hope it works!
@bingo969: Now that you have a couple names for the buckle, It may be as simple as walking into a hardware store (used for tightening hold-down straps) or backpacking store (used for tightening pack straps). Good luck!
