This sounds great, provided it includes the same on/off control feature by notification type, as we have with email. FB, Twitter and SMS are all good options - thanks for asking.

Actually, I would prefer carrier pigeon. Seriously. When I'm on vacation, I refuse to check emails but everyone gets a response saying if they wish to contact me they can by carrier pigeon. Wouldn't mind if deals did that.

"I'm on a vacation enjoying life, I'll be back to the real world eventually, till then take comfort in that your emails will not be read.

In case of emergency, I may be contacted by carrier pigeon."

How about a notification for whenever a new staff member comes in?

I would like the email notifications to appear how they are posted. There are no line breaks in any of the email notifications I receive.

Seminole Flags would be my preferred method of receiving notifications - I want a personal woot employee to follow me around from a distance and let me know when someone posts on something for when I "Want to stay up-to-date"

This could also give someone like the newly hired loosecannon something to do!

I think you should be able to save search items and have updates sent to you when new results (maybe an option to filter between popular/fresh) come up with that search word or are tagged with it.

For instance, say I make a search for "shoes" because I'm looking for a new pair. So say there is no living deal I find that I like. So I save the search and put it on notice. Now, instead of having to remember every now and then to do a search for "shoes," I instead get a notification when new, shoe-related deals pop up.

My two bits.

I would like notification when my favorite deal-finders have posted new deals.

@meestergud: Probably was "semaphore" that he meant, although the idea of a Seminole Indian following him around was pretty funny.

I like the notification feature, but the default setting when posting deals should be not to get notified.

Perhaps there should be notification when the overlords make meaningful changes to the site...you don't need to specify the change, just invite us in to find it ourselves. Like, perhaps, you could update the Leaderboards to reflect current, rather than ancient, activity.

@shawnmiller: that the deal you posted is about to be expired and do you want to find a new one?

@wootvan: agreed; there needs to be a global switch on the per deal/question auto-notification thing if at all possible.

As a change to the current notifications, is there a way to send one instead of 20 emails? For instance, I am set to be notified of any additions to a certain thread. There are 20 responses added to this thread. Can I just get one email saying there have been additions to the thread instead of 20 emails with each add? Not sure how feasible this would be, but my latest thought.

As far as the notify me being set default to on when posting a deal or question, I think it's a good way to have it. This way someone who isn't as familiar with the site will get notified when someone has a question about their deal or has answered their question in AtW. Otherwise they may miss it and never know there was a response. Those of us who are familiar with the site can take the half-second to uncheck the box if we don't want to be notified.

I think it's great that you're looking into doing this. I'd recommend that staff look back at the dozens of requests that have been made since early in beta testing.

As I recall, the majority of requests have been for an auto-alert feature where you can set search terms and have deals.woot email you when a post matches your criteria.

Many of us have pointed out that users can set up RSS feeds, but I think email, SMS, IMs and tweets (& maybe even FB) would be great additions.

Here are a few examples that I found quickly:

@hobbit: I didn't do it! No one saw it, you prove a thing.
