They can be fun hooked up to a hookah.

I have two. I use them for cleaning around the house. I use strong chemicals in the shower and if I didn't have the mask, it would probably knock me out. I keep the other as a spare because I never want to be without one.

I have bought one, and have taught people how to properly use (don and seal)them, plus explained filtration issues. I would tend to avoid any of the masks that have been posted on deals.woot. read about them and make an informed decision. surplus gas masks are surplus for a reason. Most people find out the hard way if their mask isn't good.

Yes. When I worked in DC, we were issued crappy "escape masks" that were pretty much plastic bags you put over your head. They had a shelf-life of a year or 2 and had an effective use time of 30 minutes, which would have been about enough time to make it down stairs and into a traffic jam in the parking lot, or outside the gate before suffocating... The gov't spent over $200 each on that garbage.

I spent a few minutes doing some research and found www.approvedgasmasks.com and ordered a couple high-end masks and filters (with 8-10 hour use time) from them for around that price. Full face shield, ballistic grade, silicone seal (not rubber) etc, etc... I figured if Uncle Sam thought I needed a mask, I'd get something that might actually save me.

One thing to be wary of is the filter. New/current issue is one thing, but you do not want a surplus filter, as filters degrade over time and the older ones that you see in surplus catalogs can become toxic and/or lose their effectiveness.
