When calling in sick to work and I'm not really sick, should I use a voice like I am sick?
....Or just tell them I'm not coming in
Just call and tell them you can't make it. Lying will just Piss off those that have to pick up your slack even more
@ruger9mm: Because they would be mad if you were "sick" but not if you just didn't wanna come in that day.
I always come up with an illness to where I don't have to sound too sick, something like a stomach bug (people really don't wanna know about the details of your digestive system) or, since I'm diabetic, I'll use a "My blood sugar got real low all last night and I just feel like crap now," excuse.
cough, cough absolutely. But make sure it's believable.
@captainsuperdawg: my point, which I may not have been clear in making, is that they will not like to have to pick up your workload either way, but by using a fake sick voice they know you are lying also. Thus, they will have the added resentment of knowing you think that they are stupid enough to believe your lie.
Thumbs up to calling in and saying you can't make it. If it's not habitual, you typically won't have to explain it, and if you do you can just say some personal business and leave it at that.
whenever i feel like sleeping in, i just call and say "I don't feel so good." Say it right when you wake up and it comes out like you mean it :P
I second the call right when you wake up. I always sound like death warmed over right after my alarm goes off. Also "food poisoning" is a great illness that people don't want many details about. You do have to decide if you want to throw some restaurant under the bus, blame leftovers that went bad or keep it more vague. But it's a good reason for not going in one day but being fine the next.
@ruger9mm: Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, ok. But if the fake sick voice is convincing enough, then your co-workers will simply think "He's sick, poor thing," rather than "What a lazy jackass. Playing hookey while I'm here busting my butt."
I just use email.
They will catch on, if it's only during the Woot-Off. Try to mix it up a little. And don't go too far, avoid long term or fatal illness, unless you are handy with stage make-up. Nothing that might inspire a fundraiser.
Call from inside the bathroom (acoustics, you know) and then announce the possible food poison problem.
Flush during the conversation.
Don't make a big deal, just say something like you're on a short leash.
Just call in and say that something came up that you need to take care of, and you need to burn a PTO (Personal Time Off).
If your company combines Sick Time with Personal Vacation Time into PTO, it's really the best (and honest) way to go.
If those two types of Time-off are separated, and your Sick Time doesn't roll over, then hell yeah, call in sick with the bad food/bathroom thing.
use your best acting skills to sound like you're about to die, so they figure out you're lying and fire your lazy butt.
I'd use a "stuffy head" kind of voice. Easy to do, and people can easily relate.
I would say you have the runs. Nobody wants you in and they won't ask any questions. The best way to do it is to call in 20min before you're boss gets there and leave a voicemail.
Fill a large cup with water then put the phone near the toilet while you abruptly pour the water into the toilet bowl. You can put some ice cubes or other dissolvable "chunks" in the cup of water for added affect. This method can simulate both up-chucking and dooking. If you're going for puking, you'll have to stop talking and make a gagging sound before you pour. Do a practice run before making the phone call to get the amount of water and speed of pour down to a science. Put an artistic flare on it by changing how you pour. (ex: starting and stopping pouring)
Works every time.
Best answer is places that just use PTO, what you do and why you take it is strictly your business.
If your workplace insists on reasons, be creative. Here is one if you live in the desert Southwest: "The health department said I had to stay home but I feel fine! I keep telling them that Spot was just an old dog: he didn't die of any plauge or anything."
