I telecommute, and when the emails stop coming in (or everyone seems to be emailing from their phone), I know people have left the actual office for the day. That's when I go about my business of life.

We normally work a 10/4 schedule. I work 7am-6pm, Mon-Thurs. But this week we work 8hrs a day Mon-Weds, with Thursday and Friday off (we traded Veterans' Day for Friday). So I am working 7am-4pm this week. It's great getting off before the sun goes down! We used to get let off at 2pm on the last day before the holidays, but some management brain trust put in time clocks that the lower echelons have to swipe to electronically track their time and now it is incredibly complicated to let them out early. They can't send us salaried folks home early and keep the wage slaves chained to their desks, so the only time we get out early is in the event of natural disaster. Which used to never happen around here and has happened twice in the last six or so years.

Hey! I resemble that wage slave chained to the desk... Except I have 3 desks and they are in different locations around the complex.

Nope. Today is a normal work day for me (8am-5pm).

@pyxientx: Hey, my heart is with you. I was there once myself. Us "exempt" folks were just as mad and offended as the "non-exempt" folks when those time-clocks went in. We all really believe in what we do here, and these time-clocks are an insult to the integrity and commitment of my co-workers. One of the guys said it like this, "I worked all my life to get out of the factory and start a real career and here I am back punching a time clock." It should be about whether you get the job done, and done well, not whether you were at your desk for exactly 600 minutes today.

I get off once I finish for the day...speaking of which, I might be done now.

@moondrake: While I don't have to punch in on a time clock, I have employees that do. Just tell your boss that I, as a safety manager, said all time clocks are a danger in the work place. They create in an employee the need to rush. This not only is demoralizing, it is a direct violation of safety protocol in that there is no running, pushing, pulling, etc allowed in the work place (kind of like trying to get to class before the tardy bell rings for school children). Furthermore, it (time clock) can create employee animosity towards each other and bosses. Having a policy against workplace violence IS an OSHA requirement. As your employer it is their job to ensure their policy is not violated.

My quailifications, should they ask... Safety Trainer for Chemical Plants 10 years, Master Instructor Certified and Current Safety Manager and Trainer for a small lumber treating plant (3 years).

@mtm2: Lucky! Have a happy turkey day.

I get off and hour early today which is always nice, thanks boss, then a 4 day weekend.

vote-for3vote-against

Full schedule of course. With two paid days off and a week+ for Christmas/new years i won't complain.

vote-for2vote-against

Just got word we're shutting down 2 hours early today. That makes me do my happy dance :)

Every year this place lets out of work at 2 except for a person in each office to take the phones. But they never announce it until an hour or two beforehand.

Boss was discussing letting people off at 4 instead of 5 when one department head started screaming "no everyone has to work till 5 no one can leave early" and the boss then backed down.....god I love my co-workers.....

@pyxientx: Great argument! Unfortunately, now that they have spent money on this system, someone would probably have to be trampled to death and have their family sue before they'd relent and toss the things.

Normal work day, and I'm not paid for holidays. Jerks.

@moondrake: Yeah, it didn't work for me, either. Boss said he had to know when people came and went. I told him to hire trustworthy employees. We still have the time clock.

To All: Happy turkey day and Black Friday!!!!!!!!
