Get a mini bottle, package it with coupons and tell him they were giving away samples.

Here's a $10 off coupon:

He probably won't have a problem with it - if he does, you might be dating a girl.
But to be sure, casually tell him you're buying it for him before you actually buy any. Then see how he reacts.

save money, get the generic brand at costco.

I think @mellielou is on the right track. Most guys might not admit it, but we would be a little self-conscious by getting something like that, especially if he's already noticing it himself. I would see if he jokes about it again, and then say something like "well, I saw a deal on Rogaine on deals.woot, it couldn't hurt to try it". If you don't want to wait for him to bring it up, try @mellielou's suggestion.

I'd still ask him first even if he's not a complete sensitive baby. Guys would rather buy these things themselves if at all, so they know what they are using and have confidence in their buy.

Have you talked to him about it? Some men are kind of sensitive about hair loss. Perhaps you could ask him his opinion when you see a commercial about Rogaine. "Do you think that works"? Then listen and go from there.

BUT, if he regrows hair where it's thinning, he can't tell everyone that it's his Solar Sex Panel. Why take that away from him? :)

Hair to a guy is the equivalent of Weight to a woman.
Think how you would feel if he bought you some slim fast because he saw you reading about a diet. (Not insinuating anything - just saying)

I have classic male pattern baldness and tried Rogaine. It was greasy and a pain to apply. After several weeks there was no substantial regrowth. In the cases in which it does work, you have to continue using it FOREVER in order to maintain any gains. I choose to finally except my hair loss with dignity, and I recommend you let your guy do the same.

I'm a guy. Fortunately I have thick hair. However if I didnt. I'm about 90% sure I'd be a little sensitive to the subject. So be careful is all I can say.

depends on what you consider a "gift". if you walk in on some random day and say "hey, i've seen you spying this and thought you might want to try it, if not, no big deal" then there is nothing at all wrong with that. if its his birthday, or your anniversary or something, then that would be a dick move.

I'm a guy, and I use it. It says right on the package it can take a few months before it starts working, which is what I experienced.

Yes, it can be annoying to apply, and you can't stop using it, but look at it this way: many guys these days gel their hair or put some other junk on it. Is that so different? Even though I never had great hair, or was that attached to it, I still appreciated the self-esteem boost by having it start growing back.

That being said, my girlfriend and I did discuss it before I started. I had been curious about it, and she basically said, "what do you have to lose?" I personally would have been a little bit offended if she just bought it for me outright, especially at the beginning. Now that I've been using it for a few years, it wouldn't bother me at all.

Thanks for all the input. I brought it up last night. We were talking about my sister and her husband and how they were teasing each other publicly on Facebook; he makes fun of her gummy smile and she teases him for going bald. It wasn't even my intention to bring it up but I saw it as an opportunity. I mentioned how it must be tough to be 25 and balding (my brother in law). My guy, who is 42, said he's lucky his lasted as long as he did. Then I just said all casual like "Well, Woot always has those 4-pack Rogaine deals. You wanna try it? I'll buy but you have to use it for at least 4 months before it starts working." He said, "In that case, you better buy 2."

So he's going to give it a try!
