What's with all the flash drive deals today?
Seems to me like every 4th deal today is some brand or size of USB flash drive. Yes, they keep getting bigger in size. Yes, they keep coming down in size. But really, how many flash drives does one need, doesn't everyone already own about 4 at least? And just how big does one need or is even practical? I'm not complaining, people are probably just posting deals to get points and flash drives are an easy target. But, really, how many does one need, and at what size do we draw the line with overkill?

Actually, they are pretty handy. I carry at least three with me for my work and I recently had to upgrade to higher capacities to hold all of my manuals and software. But I keep a stash of the 2-4 GB cheapies/freebies for sending pictures, videos, and assorted other files to family and friends. So, I am constantly buying new ones.
Honestly, a big part of it is the fact that these flash drive deals almost always become popular. It has come to the point where if its a legitimate deal, it's guaranteed to become popular. Don't get me wrong, I love flash drives and I have them stashed all over the place, so I do truthfully enjoy seeing deals for them every once and a while. The same can also be said of Blu-Ray deals. Most blu-ray deals posted become popular, its getting a little out of control to be honest. When I find a truly great deal on things I tend to post it, I could care less about the popularity or reputation. But the fact of the matter is that many of these deals are simply posted because people know they will become popular. Finding a deal that says "blu-ray, flash-drive, or free" are almost always popular.
I love a good flash deal. Anymore, paying greater than $1 a gb is a ripoff, unless it's one of the heavy duty ones. And I always carry a few, especially when traveling.
I remember spending $30 for the first flash drive I bought for my wife: it held 256 mb. :)
@okham: I still have some 256mb and 512mb sandisks and I remember thinking it was a screaming deal for $30 when I got them at Costco :)
@theoneill555: I still use them when I need to transport a single photo or text file...about all they can handle anymore.
@theoneill555: Oh man I remember buying my very first 256mb lexar jumpdrive for like $30 from BB way back when. It was SO COOL for school. (too cool?). I wonder what happened to that....
@okham: My first one ever was 64mb from Dell, with my first laptop back in 2003. Now they have 64GB and even larger. Wow.
I only have 1 or 2 for personal use, but I have several more to store back-up copies of family photos/videos and other important digital documents. I just copy them over, label the drive and keep it in a fire-proof box.
