I use 1and1, but I always wonder if it is a good value. They seem to have a lot of problems - especially with their email servers.

Thanks for the reply. I will check them out.

A friend of mine also suggested http://www.resell.biz/domain-reseller/ for getting the domain and http://www.hostgator.com/ for hosting. Have you heard anything about them?

I've used several but think that HostGator is the best.

For domain registrations, I've been using namecheap.com.

Thanks @ruadork, namecheap.com looks pretty sweet... "lifehacker" award and all!

I use GoDaddy for my domains, only because they were the cheapest way back when, and I paid like $10 for 10 years or so.

For hosting, I use Midphase.com, I use the Linux Business Package. I paid for 36 month in advance, so it was $7.95 per month (Though they recently had a 50% off sale). I like this level, as I get unlimited domains, unlimited sub-domains, unlimited MySQL databases and database space, and, for me, the feature that sold me, SSH access to my site to really get to muck with what's going on. I can't remember the last time my site went down, though when they migrated from one data center to another, some features changed, and I had to change some of my scripts. Though these changes made their servers, therefor my site as well, more secure.

Thanks @mrmucox! I will check out Midphase.

@ruadork: I just saw that namecheap.com offer hosting as well. Is there a particular reason you prefer hostgator to namecheap for the hositng?

@gthuffines: No need for name calling. If you think it's a poor question, just downvote it. :)

Thanks @gojomoso. I have been warned against GoDaddy as well.

@galaba, @gojomoso: I only use GoDaddy because they were the cheapest at the time, and hadn't started the odd choice of advertising. I'm serious when I say I believe I paid $1 per year, hence the reason I'm out to 2020 with my domains.

Now, I have to ask, if they are the cheapest, by a good amount, why not use them? The service they offer is solid, I've NEVER had any trouble with them. They do love to bombard you with "Special Offers" when you check out, just skip them.

@mrmucox: I guess it comes down to a personal preference. I am pretty new in the hosting stuff, hence the noob discussion topic, and just wanted to get some more information (for which I thank you). Nothing wrong with saving some money, though (that is why we are all here).

The current prices for .com domains I found from the suggested sites are as follows:

namecheap.com: $9.98 per year
fatcow.com: $13.99 per year
godaddy.com: $11.99* per year
resell.biz: $8.50 per year

I used 1and1 for a long time. Cheap hosting and plenty of space, though their support spoke very poor English. I never used their e-mail system, so I can't review on that.

Now I purchase domains from GoDaddy and I host off a server sitting in my garage. The company I work for has nameservers, so that makes things very easy for me.

Also, Domain prices change, so the only way to know the actual price is by preparing to check out. A lot of places give you free domain registration when you purchase hosting space.

I use GoDaddy for domains.. only because they are the cheapest around (when using coupons - which are ALWAYS available)

For hosting I use www.eapps.com they are not cheap and don't offer "unlimited" anything.. but that is one reason I use them.. because they are HONEST. Nothing.... NOTHING in the hosting business is unlimited. Don't fall for it. there will always be some fine print, clause, TOS, etc. eApps is more geared towards high end, high cpu, professional type sites.. They have recently upgraded to cloud hosting and it has been fantastic.
