We'd covered some of this in earlier times, but yes, some of us practice the homely arts (as they used to be termed). I prefer making things that are useful. I can knit, crochet, embroider, sew, and used to work with clay (but lost interest years ago). I have friends who can re-cane a chair bottom, which is an important skill in the antique business.

I can weave, but see no purpose in doing so. I can also spin thread (from flax, aka stinging nettle) and make linen cloth. I see even less reason to do this.

Just asking for entertainment? If you have idle hands, I have plenty of weeding you could start on tomorrow, and then there's the seeding of the back vegetable beds...

@shrdlu: Oh, purely entertainment. I don't do gardening, I've a co-worker who is going to give me some bamboo, and I'm sure I'll find a way to kill it.

Sewing, that's the one I always forget. I've painstakingly crafted my last two Halloween costumes. 2009 was a kilt for a punk rocker look, and 2010 was a Soul Reaper (or shinigami) from Bleach. Of course, I'm a little OCD with stuff like this, so I had to make them as authentic as possible, and both took me over a week to make. The Hakama for the Soul Reaper was the hardest!

Yes I am THEY call me Mr. Crafty

vote-for9vote-against

@iggz: Actually, dear child, they call you "Interrupting Cow" (and just so you don't hurt yourself, here's a nice link to explain it).

@shrdlu: Hey I found one for you too!

BTW, have you thought about getting Life Alert?

Wouldn't want you to hurt yourself!

@mrmucox: Trust me, you will not find a way to kill bamboo. If you're planning to plant it in the ground, please be advised that it spreads. Big time. All over. Makes lovely hidey places for possums and rats. In many cases, the only way to get rid of it is to burn it out.

OTOH, if it's the sort of cutesy bamboo that stays in a little planter, you may be safe from it. Maybe. We refer to our neighbor's stand of bamboo as 'the trifid field."

vote-for9vote-against

@iggz: Woah, uncalled for. @shrdlu was only pointing out the fact that your post added NO useful information to the original question, and merely was placed for comic effect. Now take your ball and go home.

vote-for3vote-against

@magic cave: Yeah, so I've heard. I'm planning on putting it in a planter box, more or less, lined with rubber for this very reason. I want it to create a barrier between my neighbor and myself, but only like a wall. I'll still probably manage to kill it somehow.

@mrmucox: If you can't take the heat, get out of the sun. I was just answering the question of whether or not I'm crafty and someone obviously felt offended.

Oh and BTW, I am home.

vote-for6vote-against

Yeah, I'm pretty crafty. I'm also in the process of perfecting my woodworking skills mostly with my wood lathe. Built one custom "dinner" table (saved $1000 from not buying one) and another mini table for fun just a couple days ago.

I dabble in the craftage. I can make beaded earrings with intricate pattarns (haven't in a long time), and generally most intermediate crafty style projects. Not a pro by a long shot, but it's passable.

vote-for6vote-against

I enjoy attempting to be crafty, although I don't really have the amount of patience a lot of crafts require.

What I like do is a bit of beaded jewelry, some gardening, and cooking, if you consider that in your definition of "crafty."

I really want to learn tatting, but that looks like it'll take a lot of time and concentration if you want to do the fancy stuff.

@mrmucox: it's cool, we all learn not to pick fights with @shrdlu

I just hope she's had her coffee.....

edit: "She's crafty, and she's just my type"

vote-for5vote-against

@purplefeather: Tatting is an art that is dying out, and that makes me sad. It's easy once you have the feel of it, but getting there takes more time than you may want to invest. I have my great grandmother's shuttles, and a few of my own, but I just haven't invested the time to make anything in quite some time. I do love the look of a tatted edge on an old fashioned collar, though.

I think one of the genuine benefits of things like youtube is the number of people who are happy to share their skills with the world. I just did a search for "tatting how to" and came up with an enormous list. This is comforting, since it provides the opportunity for knowledge to be passed on.

@woothulhu: I don't think it was @mrmucox that had anything to worry about (as you probably knew). Yes, I'm still drinking coffee, and hoping that the wind dies down to a dull roar before 11AM (Pacific) or so. Yesterday it was blowing hard enough that I was waiting for it to knock me over (think 80mph and higher).

I wonder if anyone still whittles. I used to admire the things that you could turn out with a sharp knife, soft wood, and patience. Nothing like being handed a working wooden pinwheel when you're small.

@shrdlu: I was referring to the comment he made about @iggz, and awaiting your wrath

I've done some quilting, made a quilted headboard for my bed, and sometimes do some card stamping. For about 3-5 years, I created (stamped) my Christmas cards. Occasionally I help my dad when he is doing a project.

As far as the other definition of crafty... While not particularly skilled at guile, I have, at times, been known to be an instigator of mischief. (All good, clean fun I assure you.)

vote-for5vote-against

I am am somewhat crafty too! I used to do more when I was younger, I don't have that much time anymore. I am not the best but I enjoy painting and drawing. I also hem my own pants, I have always wanted to sew my own dress just never had the time or know how..have to get my mom to teach me one of these days.

vote-for2vote-against

Only in the Beastie Boys' sense of the word. Oh, no, wait...

vote-for4vote-against

@mrmucox: Use a Rubbermaid kind of container for the bamboo. You can drill a few drainage holes & bury it on the ground. It contains the runners better than anything else I know. I have clumping bamboo in the yard. A bit less invasive.

vote-for3vote-against

I knit and crochet. My mon taught me to embroider when I was about 5 or 6. I have been known to play with a glue gun now and again. I wish I had the time to do more.

vote-for3vote-against

I'm not crafty. Just Minecrafty
......Actually, I'm not that either :/

vote-for3vote-against

Used to do stained glass; gave that up for jewelry making. Now make glass beads, fabric beads and work with precious metal clay; beaded jewelry and polymer clay items, and teach both at a local chain crafting store.

I sew mostly little girls clothes. I make the hair bows to go with the clothes. I have made some blankets, quilts, drapery, and bedding. I recently learned to loom knit and I think I might actually learn to knit with needles!

vote-for1vote-against

Nope (As proved by my non-crafty comment)
