Any musicians out there?
We're a pretty diverse group, but I'm curious how many of us are musicians.
Anyone performing regularly? Anyone teaching music? Any composers? Anyone play just for fun? Any musicologists? Any theorists? Any music therapists?
And, what instruments do you play/what type of music do you play?
Alto saxophone! Haven't played in a while though. Would like to find a group or something that plays casually.
Used to slap da bass for fun. Not anymore, and think there is good reason for it.
I play guitar, but just for fun. Was never in a band or anything because I never really got good enough to play in one, but I've still managed to acquire a small guitar collection. I own a Fender strat, Epiphone Les Paul Special II, Yahama acoustic and Epiphone 12-string acoustic.
I fiddled with the violin for a bit when I was younger, but I never had the discipline/desire to really get good at it, so I quit when I was in middle school. I was in concert choir during Jr. High and High School, and I still love to sing but I hate sacrificing my free time for practice and performances, so I usually limit it to the shower and the car, or at home if I'm all alone and think nobody can hear me =P
Drummer here.
I played snare in marching band through high school and college and have instructed high school drum lines. Also played in school bands, percussion ensembles, orchestras and have played set in a few bands.
I used to play the trombone.
And no it wasn't rusty.
Cello, for 14 years (since 4th grade). I just play for fun now, I haven't had private lessons or performed since high school. I can pick my way through with any common stringed instrument and piano. I play anything, classical of course, but I really enjoy arranging more modern songs for my instrument.
in a previous life. Now an IT guy. But i still have my gear: yamaha acoustic, gibson LP studio, yamaha keyboard, and a Conn alto-sax. I am teaching my 10yr old son piano though.
No, but I am a drummer :-P
I play bass guitar for fun occasionally.
I play guitar, piano, some mandolin, some banjo, some bass, some uke. I have played in smaller bands and filled in for guitar spots when needed. Butttttttt, now I just mess around and record myself for fun.
At best, the radio.
I even suck at the kazoo.
I used to take piano lessons, but I don't/won't play the piano anymore.
I do still play my flute each month in the church orchestra.
@tossthedice: Lol at "fiddled with the violin".
I played the clarinet for a few years and I own a guitar, I wouldn't say I play it. I also own a theremin but haven't actually broken it out for fear of neighbor retribution as I learn.
And @thefenst is being modest. He's also sung at Carnegie Hall. Twice.
I am one of the many lapsed musicians.
Oboe is the only instrument I took seriously. I was first chair in a youth orchestra and reached CM level 5 or something. I have stopped but I still retain the skill of being able to pick out the sound of the oboe in every orchestra. I periodically revisit my younger days by playing a few pieces.
I also played the drums--horribly.
10 years so far on the alto saxophone
I still play rock/blues guitar. Played in a band in college, but $100 a weekend gig wouldn't pay the rent today. My son played for a while in a couple of bands, but it wasn't enough to pay the bills either. Needed a break, like a record deal, but never happened. A couple of friends still at it, sell CDs at their gigs, occasionally play festivals locally, but keep their day jobs.
Drumkit and Piano, each for 25 years here. Hey music lovers! Any of you in Central NC?
Are there any woot-type sites that cater towards musicians?
