BOOOO!!!!
The better question is who the heck is buying them at this price.
no. they're trying to distract you while they steal your car.
Is there a secret $150 bill included?
It's hard to imagine that Woot! would do something like that to their customers considering the knowledge base that they come from. However they did and 24 people did buy one. Guess they are hoping JumboWoot will show some love their way. Hope they post what happens.
@durkzilla: My initial guess was people that don't have access to the internets, so they haven't heard the news. But they are buying them on woot, so...??? My guess is people who heard from somebody, who heard from somebody, that everyone is snapping them up.
Every once in a while, Woot will post something that's NOT a deal, just to prove that there will be Wooters who will buy anything.
This is one of those whiles.
(Another example - the old shirt.woot green space!)
haha the same thought occurred to me.
It was a little surprising. (typed on $99 touchpad)
Maybe this will shed some light on it http://global.christianpost.com/news/99-hp-touchpad-tablet-successful-from-being-unsuccessful-58117/
@mtrlgrl: ? lol I don't get it..
I found one of these at a local store in the middle of the night on the weekend the announced the price drop. They hadn't changed the price yet and they agreed to hold it until the next morning so I could talk to the manager about the price. When I came in the next day, it was gone. I'm feeling the pain too...
@durkzilla: People who realize that they will never get a TouchPad for $99. Who has paid only $99 for one since 2 days after the fire sale? No one...
Find me one place where they're actually in stock and are only $99/$149. Supply and demand.
I am happy to see this question. biz.tigerdirect.com called me to let me know about a count down to release some 32gb Touchpads with accessories. I opted to not post it here because I was pretty sure it was not a deal.
Copied and pasted from site:
Here is what you'll get
- HP 32GB TouchPad
- Belkin 10.1" Tablet Case
- Belkin FlipBlade Tablet Stand
- Creative Labs D80 Bluetooth Speakers
- (Bonus: HP 16GB USB Flash Drive)
All for just $279.99
I’m one of those who got one. I saw touchpad and hit the button. Yes it is higher than I would like, no I didn’t get one during the fire sale. I still think I will get 250$ worth of use out of it. Although not as cheap as I would have liked, I still think it is a deal because I got more product then I paid for.
I'm torn. Most "comparable" touchpads go for 300+, so in theory it's not a bad deal. However, it sits poorly with us who think that Woot bought a bunch for 99 and sold for 249.
@mtrlgrl: That's an interesting article. I wonder how many merchants will be staying at the HP prices, and how many will be trying to gouge consumers. If HP can make a profit at the $99/149 price point they ought to manufacture a bunch more since they have already made the initial investment for production. I'll bet they could knock up to $150/200 and still sell them by the truckload.
@moondrake: Why do you think that HP is making a profit at these prices?
Estimated parts/manufacturing costs are around $300 each (the 16/32 GB models differ by about $10).
They're taking a loss on every unit that ships. Their decision to crank out a final production run was probably based on shoring up customer relations, and - especially - on fulfilling existing production contracts. If HP is committed to buying X units of a part, they lose money if they cancel the order or if they sell the product at a loss. My 32GB model was part of that last run; and I'm sure glad I scored! (Also a Touchstone charger, which is still too cool for words).
Ad how do you know how much Woot! is paying for the tablets? HP isn't selling ANY more directly, and is unlikely to offer additional units to re-sellers at a loss.
@rpstrong: That's why I started my sentence with "if". If they are taking a loss then obviously they shouldn't continue manufacturing them. I didn't say anything about how much woot paid for them, that was someone else. I based my belief that HP was going to sell additional units to re-sellers at a loss on the statements in this article:
"HP plans to ship around 200,000 TouchPad units by the end of this month.
Optimal prices for the device will be $99 for the 16GB version and $149 for the $32 GB version." "Unfortunately those fire sale prices which customers were able to take advantage of over the summer may not be available since HP is allowing individual retailers to determine the amount they will charge for the TouchPad." http://global.christianpost.com/news/99-hp-touchpad-tablet-successful-from-being-unsuccessful-58117/
Some insight from the Woot POV- we got these from a vendor other than HP before the whole pricing debacle. Since the vendor wasn't HP they could give two craps about us getting a price match on the tablets we got after the absurd price drop. It's likely we sold them in the Woot-Off this morning at less than we paid for it, but clearly not the very least you could find them at some point.
Anyway, I just wanted to state for the record that we're not trying to get away with anything here and we're sorry if the sale going up offended anyone.
@drchops: Check out @moondrake's summary a few posts above this one. He summarizes it well (she?).
Have to agree. I was one of the few who picked one up for $150. I love it. But until Android is released for it, I only use it for Angry Birds and for watching movies on.
Update: The $99 touchpad is coming back http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/12/07/hp-touchpad-sale-ebay_n_1135085.html?ref=technology
edit: someone was smart enough to put it up as a deal already http://deals.woot.com/deals/details/b5ba05f7-f005-4cee-a6e8-cfb9d0ab08c7/touchpads-from-hp-firesale-prices-refurbished#120
