Suggestion: Could older questions be moved up when a ***new*** Answer is given?
When someone answers an old question, the only people who see that answer are those who 'subscribed' to the question. I think it would be beneficial if the old question was somehow moved up in the 'questions asked' queue to show everyone the new answer.
Benefits:
It might ellicit more answers.
People who missed it when originally asked could see it.
AND, it might stop a lot of duplicate questions.
The current tabs are TOP and FRESH. Not suggesting another tab (please no!), but maybe they could be bumped up in the FRESH tab, cause it is a fresh answer.
Whadyathink?
Would that encourage people to add additional comments to their own questions to keep their question at the top in hopes of getting more votes to improve their rep?
As for me, I'm getting tired of silly questions that seem to have no real purpose other than to increase someone's rep. I want those to disappear from the "fresh" and "top" areas as soon as possible and to never return again.
@cengland0: I don't think it would encourage the originator of the question to add more comments. They could do that now. What I'm hoping is it would cut down on dups and show questions that others may have missed.
Just saw a new answer to an old question today (the popcorn machine question). I saw it because I had subscribed. Others who never saw that ? may also have more info, but don't even know the question was asked. Not everyone looks through old questions. In fact, I think very few do.
Edited to add: Re: The rep issue - ignore questions you don't like or vote down if you wish. They will go away. I agree that some questions seem silly or even rep associated, but I just slide over them & go on to the next.
I had the same idea awhile back, which was already someone else's idea. Link below in case you missed it.
I totally agree with you!
@woothulhu: Arrgghhh! Your question is 11 months old & even referred to similar questions already asked before that. Nothing is new, eh? Nothing changed or resolved either. Thanks so much for your input - appreciated!!
I agree. Or at least have a sort option/tab dedicated to questions sorted by comment. Then when we searched for a topic of interest it would be to join a discussion, not to see if its already been asked.
Strangely, we had a small side conversation in a recent question on this very topic, after a mod put in a reminded to search for previous topics before posting a new question. Rather disparagingly, woot decided to delete the question - which was deemed a duplicate of of a question from 2 months ago. It was at top of the 'top questions' section and had 45 votes and 25+ answers.
Perhaps have a basic rule that if the question goes dormant for more than a week/month? - then any new answer would pop it back into the "fresh" tab? That way you can't keep bumping your own question - but we could still see relevant questions and avoid dups?
Re: Dup questions Would like to add that part of the problem of duplicate questions is the removal of tags. I had "meta", "old-questions" & "new-answers" as tags on this question. The two that actually identified this question so it could be searchable were removed.
IOW If someone searched to see if this question had been asked before, they would not find it. It would be nice if tags that truly identify a question could remain. Meta and suggestion are not good searches for a question similar to this one. Could be ANY suggestion - who would think of searching on that?
