I have had great luck scoring nice, reasonably price towels at TJ Maxx and Target.

I bought new towels recently. Some very nice fluffy soft ones from LLBean.
I had a bunch of coupons to use, so it worked out well for me.
They are thick, but they dry no problem. They last forever, and stay nice. Worth the extra. Cheap towels will pull and certainly don't feel as nice.
They have regular towels and bath sheets. Not sure if that is what you mean by size. If you try them and you don't like them, you can still send them back. They guarantee everything 100%.

I got some thinish (not loopy but not velvety, and nice and absorbent) regular but good sized towels at ikea for $5; they have some nicer ones for a bit more, but I like the $5 ones; lots of colors to choose from! do you have an ikea reasonably close? extra added bonus: MEATBALLS!!

@ohcheri: That's what I was going to say. I got some great ones at TJ Maxx recently, they're some brand name (Donna Karan?), but were really cheap, and have held up great in the wash.

@bdsmonkey: Unfortunately there is no IKEA nearby but I looked on their website and the $3.99 ones are only 400gsm so they should be fairly thin. Thanks for that info. I think I'll order some

As far as T J Maxx, they do have nice towels at a reasonable price but they are not what I am looking for. The ones I saw were large and thick and fluffy and I'm looking for thinner ones.
My friend bought me some at Cosco or Sams and they are nice towels, but again, they are big and they are thick, not what I'm looking for.

@jjkehoe: The last towels I bought from TJ Maxx were Ralph Lauren, super nice and less than $10 each.

Hotel pools are a great place to find towels.

Here you go:
http://www.amazon.com/Pinzon-Egyptian-Cotton-725-Gram-6-Piece/dp/B002S52ZKS/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1387972891&sr=1-1&keywords=Pinzon+Egyptian+Cotton+725-Gram+6-Piece+Towel+Set

$20 for a six piece set, delivered free with Amazon Prime. 725 GSM, generously sized, cotton terry not velour as requested. I've had several sets for quite awhile and they are wonderful.
When you first receive them, run them through the washer with a cup of distilled vinegar, no detergent. You may get what looks like quite a bit of lint when you wash & dry them for the first time or two, but it stops.
DO NOT use dryer softener sheets with them. It makes your towels much less absorbent.
For twenty bucks, these are great and they come in several colors.

(Although, rereading your post, these might be too heavy & too big for what you want. They are very generously sized & something I would not be ashamed to put out for guests.)

Dollar General hahaha.....

You want nice towels? Pay for them.

@iggz: I knew it! wednesday is humpday, friday has its own saying, thursday must be douchebag day.

yep. that's got to be it.

vote-for2vote-against

@lavikinga: That set sounds like a good deal but at 725 GSM, they are about twice as thick as I am looking for. They would make nice bridal shower or house warming gifts though or even a nice set for the guest bathroom.

@iggz: Your pretentiousness quite obviously overshadows your reading comprehension.

@luke975: Speaking off 'humpday', don't you just love that commercial?? I don't even remember what they are advertising but I always stop and watch that commercial when it comes on. And Michael Strahan on "Live! with Kelly & Michael" does a fun impression of the camel speaking that makes me laugh, but then I think Michael is fantastic on that show anyway.

@donslin:
Oh Yeah! And the commercial is for GEICO BTW. ;-)

@luke975: Wow, personal attacks. Says a lot about your character. I guess for some people that's all they have to offer. But with that said, I'm glad you have a day named after your mother.

vote-for2vote-against

@iggz: I have enough character to detect a pretentious snob. nobody asked for your smartass opinion and the poster didn't say he wasn't willing to pay for them. just asked where to get them.

vote-for3vote-against

@luke975: Exactly luke975. I'm much less concerned with price or what store they come from than with size and thickness--or rather, thinness : ).
Since I have spent considerable time seeking out smaller, thinner towels than is apparently the 'new norm', I thought someplace like a Dollar General might carry, smaller & thinner. At this point, I don't care if they are $3 each or $15 each, if I can find the type I want I'll buy enough to last for the next 20 years or so!

(PS--I do go to Dollar Gen regularly to stock up on a lot of things like cleaning supplies, coloring & activity books for kids, paper products, soaps, toothpaste, etc and save a bunch of cash over grocery store prices for exactly the same things)

@luke975: Man, your douche-y-nous is out of this world. I mean, seriously, if you look up douchenozzle in the dictionary, BAM, there's your picture.

vote-for0vote-against

@iggz: And if you look up 'maturity' in the dictionary your picture sure won't be there but maybe you'll get some sense of what that means---unless you really are only 12 years old.
