True Story: Bag of crap helped a wooter make it out of Haiti.
I wanted to make sure that people saw this if they don't get (or don't read) the Woot newsletter. Below is the Woot email text with the link to the full story:
Occasionally, a human interest event occurs that knocks us out of the day-to-day and grants us perspective from a higher level. We'd like to share a pretty remarkable first hand account of an IT industry editor's narrow escape from the earthquake and aftermath - in fact a fellow Wooter, named Bryan, who not only scored one of our infamous Woot "Bags of Crap", but managed to extract some slight value out of its mediocre contents.

Bryan has suggestions for donation on his page, and you'll also find some of our favorite links at the bottom of our blog post linked above. And, as always, we welcome thoughtful commentary on our posts.
Snapster's comment should probably be noted as well (they're not making a show out of it but I think that it's a good thing):
We (Woot Inc.) doubled our haiti donation plans to $20k with a $10k donation going to Food for the Poor org.
@glidagw: Go Woot!
The blog is a terrific read. Kudos to Matt Rutledge for his generous donation.
Great blog, thanks for sharing.
Great story. Wish I could say Woot saved me... Though I have probly helped put a few kids.woot through college with all of the stuff I've bought.
Awesome.
@glindagw: How about a Bag of Crap day on Woot no actual crap sent but Wooters can donate their $8 to Haiti through Woot.
@oheifearnain: Good idea! The blog includes several links for donations. There are comments regarding all sorts of fun charity bags of crap ideas, etc. However, I think that it would be simpler if we all donated the $8 that we would spend on a Bag of Crap to one of the organizations that Matt mentions.
I'm sorta with oheifearnain on this one.
I suggest that you do the order number/DJIA thing again, except this time you give the $8 of non-winners to disaster relief instead of woot-off lights.
This is really cool.
I like the idea of woot doing a day of Woot! allowing us to donate to a charity instead of buying items, it is something that could be done System wide even, including on Deals - as one of the Sponsored deals spots.
@hobbit: I like the sponsored deal spot idea. Maybe on the other sites when a deal sells out instead of leaving SOLD OUT up untill midnight.
I'm not sure how I missed this, but I'm glad I was lucky enough to see it.
I was searching for coupons from "True Value" heh..
Awesome story - too bad this can't be bumped back to the top.. I know there are a lot of Wooters who didn't see this that'd love to read it.
