I bought my daughter a Dell Inspiron at BJ's Wholesale Club for $500. It is a really good laptop for what she needs - what are your requirements besides the price?

@durkzilla: I would like to get the most powerful one for under $600. I can't say my specific requirements, but just to mention, I don't care much about battery life

@danpalm: Well, "most powerful" is a really vague goal - a computer that excels in number crunching for the math whiz may be a crappy choice for the video editor dealing with large data files, and neither machine may fit the needs of the casual gamer who just wants to play World of Warcraft.

This machine is a good compromise and fits your budget: http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=fncwv10h&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&model_id=inspiron-15r-n5110

The second generation Core i3 CPU is pretty competent, and it comes with 4GB of RAM which should be sufficient for most purposes (don't plan on running five virtual machines, though). The hard drive is big and slow, though.

@durkzilla I know that I am vague, but i don't know exactly what I will use it for. How about the one at 1saleaday.com it has a core i5 4gb ram and a 640gb hard drive

I've had my eye on this one:

Great reviews on Amazon, Newegg and TigerDirect. It dropped $60 in price today..so $429.99..only 1 left in stock at Amazon. TigerDirect also has it for $429. I guess Amazon price matched them today. I have been following it for a few months. Highest price has been $600 at HP, lowest is $430. I am going to wait until Black Friday/Cyber Monday to see if it drops down any lower.

@danpalm: I wouldn't give my credit card info to a company that posts a bogus Authorize.net Verified Merchant seal.
