WiIl U be purchasing Wii U?
Nintendo's next system has just been announced at this year's Electronics Entertainment Expo, the Wii U.
I've watched all the videos and it seems pretty impressive.
The Wii U is comparable in horsepower to the Xbox 360 and PS3 and will be released at around the current price of those systems when it debuts in 2012. It appears to also be backwards compatible with current generation Wii titles.
It'll also come with a new wireless, dual analog controller with a built in, front facing camera and touch screen. The controller supports remote viewing, content push and also acts as a supplemental output.
Big questions are, do you plan on getting one when it comes out and what are your reasons?

If it says Nintendo, someone in my house will have one.
Short Answer: Yes.
Long Answer: HELL YES!
It reminds me vaguely of a cross between the Sega VMU and the Atari Jaguar controller.
I'm going to wait at least 3 or 4 months after release to see if it catches on (I'm skeptical, and I'm worried it might be too heavy to use comfortably for an extended period of time), but I'll likely buy after that if it does become popular... the concept is cool if the support is there.
I really love the trailer they revealed. Shows off a multitude of possibilities http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4e3qaPg_keg
I may be in the minority by saying this but anyone claiming to be a gamer who purchases anything related to modern Nintendo should be taken out back and shot.
I miss the Nintendo of old, which made GoldenEye, Perfect Dark and the ton of other great games which didn't necessarily rely on a big name (Mario) to succeed. Modern day Nintendo is just crap.
most likely...I own almost everything else they have put out over the last 25 years.
I might get the Wii U, but I probably can't afford the controller to use it.
@razmig00: Obviously, you didn't watch the conference, because the majority of games announced for Wii U were hardcore: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pie__lT4RY
EDIT: I mean all. They all are. With the exception of the Lego sandbox game and the prototype games
I'm personally not impressed. To me it just looks like they combined the Wii with a DS and put it in HD. A lot of what they showed seems more gimmicky than anything else. From the video I get the sense that it will have the same life as the Wii: everyone will want one for a while, then things die off as there is a lack of games compared to other consoles.
I still think it'll do great (Nintendo could sell anything if their name's on it), but from the video I'm just not interested.
It's a gimmick, but if they make a Zelda title for it, I have to get it.
Innovation is gimmick... why are Microsoft and Sony doing motion control now?
Since Nintendo all but reinvented themselves with the Wii era games and hardware, they've been my favorite company. While the PS3 has a good amount of original content and that (overpriced) Blu-ray player, I've been happy having it to a point. The 360 has been a massive failure, and I'm embarrassed to own one. Most of its games are available in superior format on the PC, and what isn't isn't worth playing.
My Wii on the other hand has been a riot. Overwhelming 4 player support through a major segment of Wii games, the FUN controller (though if you ignore motion control, the various Dualshocks reigns supreme), and the focus on good gameplay rather than pretty but dull interactive movies CoughLastFourFinalFantasiesCough has thrown it miles ahead of the other two latest-gen consoles.
To answer the original question, it depends on the price for me. If it's $200, I'll probably be an early adopter. Those first-generation console models are always the most mod-able, which I live for.
My interest has certainly been piqued.
I won't know whether I want it or not until they release the full specs; but right now all I can think about is how much it must cost to buy a second controller. Yikes.
U Wii Will!
I'm sure that with this system will come many puns just like the question header. sigh
I haven't owned a gaming console in years (the original XBOX was my last), but the Wii U is definitely making me reconsider this.
It looks a little clunky to be honest, maybe the second gen will be more refined. It is an awesome concept though!
Eww. Looks like they took the Sega Dreamcast and added a touchable screen to the controller. I agree it looks very clunky. It's a nice concept to a point, but personally won't consider buying it. What ever happened to systems with 6 buttons and a directional pad for a controller?
I haven't watched the video but I am curious if it still has a health focus like Wii Fit?
I just want the controller for my old wii!
no dice nintendo
I'll wait for ps4 or wii 3!
I'll wait til it's been out a year and the price comes down. We've got a wii, xbox, xbox 360, kinect, so our house has plenty of games when we want to play.
the review I saw on the news looked pretty interesting, I saw them laying the controller/screen thing on the floor and using a wii-mote golf club thing to hit the image of the ball on the controller's screen up onto the tv. I also like the demo where the controller's screen had the crosshairs for aiming at the the tv, almsot as if the controller's screen was transparent. I could see this being fun with first person shooters like COD... actually being able to really aim would vastly improve on console FPS games IMO.
sorry my answer should have read.
U bet wii will.
I was trying to hand Nintendo my wallet through my monitor as I was watching the video.
Since the Wii U will have comparable graphics to that of a close to six year old gaming system and they couldn't even use their own graphics but use graphics of that old system, then I probably won't. (http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/08/nintendo-admits-its-wii-u-highlight-reel-was-spiced-up-with-ps3/) It will also use their own proprietary disc format instead of blu-ray. The devs won't be able to harness the full power of the Wii U for another two more years and by then hopefully the next gen Playstation and Xbox will be out. Nintendo is behind the ball again. The only positive thing I can say about Nintendo is their exclusive titles of Mario and Zelda. People will buy just for that.
If I can afford it. I mean eventually I'm sure I will, it looks awesome albeit a bit weird. I'm just afraid that touch screen is gonna jack up the price.
Looks very neat, but I'm going to stick with Xbox and Kinect.
@jesseandalison: You did watch the trailer long enough to realize that your old Wiimotes will work with it as well, right? And really for any active (as in, Wii sports and sports titles) that will be the only reasonable way to go.
My guess is that it will sell well since it has the Wii name, but like the Wii will appeal too much to the casual crowd and throw good gaming out the window. My Wii has been collecting dust for about a year now...
Nintendo has never ceased to amaze me with their hardware... Unique, innovative, capable, and less expensive than the competition. The hardware engineers obviously understand that graphics and raw power aren't everything, but that the interactive experience itself is.
However, I refuse to buy another Nintendo console until the software development catches up. If I wanted lots of buttons for my games, I'd play games on my PC; fumbling for 'buttons' on my DS's touchscreen isn't innovative, creative, or fun. Shaking the wiimote like an Etch-a-sketch shouldn't serve as an extra button either.
If it ends up as easy to mod as the current Wii and develops a 'homebrew' scene like the DS had, I might consider. Sad to say, I'm finding myself more optimistic about that than Nintendo's own software.
But that's probably just me.
