Evil Dead, or Evil Dead 2?
I've never seen any of the Evil Dead movies but I'm interested. I read that Evil Dead 2 is a remake of Evil Dead. Is that true, and if so, does that mean that I don't need to see them both?
No spoilers, please!
Bonus question: How does a law-abiding citizen go about watching said films these days, now that I can no longer traipse down to my local Blockbuster (and I don't have Netflix)?
You have to watch the entire series. they are all good and bad in their own way.
I enjoy them all, but AoD is my favorite.
Army of Darkness and Evil Dead 1 and 2 are on itunes for rent.
The Evil Dead
Released in 1981, this is the first film in the series. It introduces the series' protagonist, Ash, and the Book of the Dead and what it brings with it.
Evil Dead II
Released in 1987, this film shows the horror themes of Ash's dealings with the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis and demons.
Army of Darkness
Released in 1992, this is the last film in the franchise so far, taking Ash back in time to England in 1300 AD. The movie has horror attributes, but is based mainly on slapstick and action. This time the evil creatures are explicitly referred to as deadites.
Essentially, if you want to see where Bruce Campbell and the Raimis began, watch #1. If you want to watch Army of Darkness directly after, watch #2, since it's effectively a two-parter.
They're all fun. But #2 and AoD bring the campiness up a LOT. #1 is the low-budget, indie original. It's more trying to be horrorish, whereas the others are out-and-out comedy.
Also, AoD will make the Duke Nukem games make a lot more sense. (Kinda.)
I have no preference.
@capguncowboy: I bet you don't
Evil Dead 2 is not a remake of 1, although the first part of it does recap the first movie with a different take on it. Most of it can rightly be considered a sequel. I would highly recommend watching all 3, although 2 and AoD do take a much more comedic turn.
