Any suggestions on handling a terrifying clothes moth infestation?
I have a disturbing amount of clothes moths and I would like to get rid of them. They are mostly in larval form right now, but as the weather gets warmer and moister they are going to become much, much worse.
I got some pheromone moth traps (not even sure if they are the right kind; all I know is that they are not labeled for webbing moths, which would make them definitely the wrong kind) and am planning on buying some diatomaceous earth, which will hopefully kill some of them. And I'll do a lot of vacuuming. But I can't/am too lazy to clean the house from top to bottom and have everything dry-cleaned. Does anyone have any experience s/he is willing to share and/or some easy, practical tips? Thanks in advance!
There is a great new site called MothPrevention.com http://www.mothprevention.com which provides the UK's widest range of moth control and prevention products and also gives very good advice both on-line and over the phone. I hope this helps.
I'd like to add for prevention next time: get your woolens cleaned before putting them back into the closet or drawer, especially if it's the end of the season for them. Try to keep clothing storage areas cool and dry as possible (I like those jars of calcium chloride that suck water into them). You should store your most dear clothing in sealed zippered garment bags or a cedar chest or other impermeable storage, like a plastic box w/ lid. I've also used the pheromone trap for both types of moths and it works great in conjunction with other extermination techniques.
To everyone: you are all wonderful.
They sell moth traps in 2 varieties, for pantry/food eating moths and closet/cloth eating moths. You will want to eliminate these before thay destroy everything. the traps attract the males who then stick to the trap glue and no more baby moths.
I had a pantry moth problem for many many months and after trying everything including cleaning extensively, I found the traps online and the problem ended within a week. (I was still killing the flying ones with my bug zapper)
happy trapping
Ewww sorry I am petrified of moths. I run around screaming like a little girl. I use the extension wand on my vacuum to suck them up...
Cedar blocks - and a few moth balls where it won't overpower clothing.
Cheapazz rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle. you don't have to soak your clothes, just misting once a week or so.
Boric acid works as well as the diatomaceous earth does, just different. Also vacuum a little boric acid every time you finish vacuuming. Since you've sucked up various larvae, eggs, and sundry little critters into the vacuum you don't them to leave.
