I'm still looking but this was the first thing that popped in my head that sort of does what you want, The Neverlate Executive Alarm Clock from thinkgeek. It has mp3 connectivity over a usb port.

@catbertthegreat: This is a nice alarm that I haven't seen before.

Although it has an impressive set of features, I still would not be able to fall asleep to a selection of songs and then wake-up to a different selection of songs. Nevertheless, it is a good find. Thanks for the effort and I can't wait to see what else you might find! :)

I don't know if this is what you're thinking of, but it's what I do. Why don't you just hook your ipod up to a set of speakers and use it's sleep and alarm features? You listen to what you want to going to sleep and tell it to go to sleep in 30 minutes and then set the alarm for whatever playlist you want to wake up to. Works like a charm

I also found this alarm clock from timex at amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Timex-Alarm-Clock-Radio-Songs/dp/B000OKXA6W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1260767479&sr=8-1
Here is the thing, there might be plenty of alarm clocks that may support the go to sleep on any song and wake on a certain song but it isn't an advertised feature and we can't always look at the manual of everything we buy online.

@quailman had the best idea using the ipod internal sleep and alarm functions and hook it up to an external speaker, maybe this one I posted earlier?: http://deals.woot.com/deals/go/5c4d1192-8477-4607-85dc-d5f35fb103b2

@quailman: Forgive me on this, but I am actually not too familiar with the infamous ipod. I recently acquired an iPod Classic and I didn't realize it had this alarm feature. Can you tell the ipod to play through a playlist while falling asleep and also for waking-up?

vote-for1vote-against

@catbertthegreat: I guess I'm a little confused. I have asked many different people in many different electronics stores (and friends... etc.). I was told that when an iPod docks to a speaker/radio it will only be able to wake-up to whatever song is playing when the ipod was last shut-off. Therefore, although the alarm clock has the sleep feature and the ability to wake to music on the ipod, it still cannot play certain songs for falling asleep and a different set of songs for waking up. Is this not correct? Please help me see where I am wrong.

@flappysquirrel: Here is how to program the alarm function: http://www.methodshop.com/gadgets/tutorials/ipodalarmclock/index.shtml

How to use the sleep timer:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA26500?viewlocale=en_US

Basically follow the instructions for the alarm. Then pick the music you want to listen to and activate the sleep timer. The ipod will sleep after a certain period of time. The alarm will then go off and play the playlist it was programmed to play, not what was playing when the ipod went to sleep.

@catbertthegreat: So what you're telling me is that I really should be looking for a nice speaker set for my ipod? :)

vote-for1vote-against

@flappysquirrel: No, you really need just need to find a nice set of external speakers you like and follow the instructions in the one with link to apple support.

The ihome will do the same thing, let it play whatever music you want to sleep to, it will then play the alarm to the playlist called ihome in your ipod. See page 5 in the ihome manual:

@quailman: Thanks for the great tip! While this will work great once I get a pair of speakers for my ipod, my quest still continues.

I know I didn't mention this before, but ideally, the alarm clock would have a projector to project the time on the ceiling. Is there any speaker dock for the ipod that has a projector? I've never seen one. Thanks for the help!

@flappysquirrel: I liked the set that Woot had some time ago. I think it was a Phillips. I liked it because it had blue tooth, and a CD player, and the ipod dock. I never ever listen to anything with a headset, so the ipod lives in that dock.

One of the things that was attractive with that one was that it had a remote. Yes, I am that lazy.

Found it. http://www.woot.com/Forums/ViewPost.aspx?PostID=3197899

Actually, @catbertthegreat, if you end up finding one of these, I'd like another. The original was $89.99 plus the $5.00 S&H.

"Philips Micro Hi-Fi System with Bluetooth, CD, SD, USB & iPod Dock"

"You ordered 1 Philips BTM630/37 Bluetooth Micro Hi-Fi Stereo System with iPod Dock, SD slot, USB, CD, AM/FM, EQ. which each cost $89.99"

It's a nice product, and I'd love it somewhere near that price.

@catbertthegreat: Unbelievable. I can't believe all the people who have steered me astray. THANK YOU! I had not idea it could be so simple! I am seriously impressed. Thanks guys!

@shrdlu: So help me (the ignorant one) out here... What's so great about the blue tooth? What does this allow you to do?

vote-for2vote-against

@flappysquirrel: I didn't care about it. The bluetooth allows you to talk to it and upload stuff without connecting cables, but I have bluttooth DISABLED on every device I own. It's one of the first things I do. I liked the built in CD, and the AM/Fm Radio, and the iPod dock. The slot for the SD card, the USB, the Bluetooth, all were wasted on me.

If you find you really need the computer, you can use the "remote stereo" plugs like

http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-WMB54G-Wireless-G-Music-Bridge/dp/B000E5E6KG

to keep your noisy computer away from the bedroom. Bonus is that you have to go to the other room to turn it off ;)

The Logitech Squeezebox Boom will do that but it is over $200 and requires a computer to be turned on all the time and the files must be stored on the computer.
