I would suggest the Canon. The two are fairly evenly matched, having similar resolution, CCD sensor size, and a negligible difference in zoom (18x v 20x). However, I trust Canon as a brand when it comes to cameras more than Panasonic, and Canon's super-macro feature is amazing, allowing you to focus on objects practically touching the lens (great for nature/artistic photos). The only pull I see to the Panasonic is its better continuous shooting mode, which would be better for sports or children in action (1fps vs 2.3 fps). What may also be a pull or draw in either direction is that the Canon can run on standard AAs, while the Panasonic relies on it's own LiON battery.
