I don't see why this comes as a surprise. It's like this every year. Given, if you went back 10 years you wouldn't see this much assault in advertising until after Chanksgiving, so I feel your pain there.

I've been seeing shelves even a month ago. Seems to get earlier each year. And last night I saw Christmas commercials on TV (Ebay, Glade).

Some places already had Christmas stuff for sale in the beginning of October.

I call it Christmas creep ... where the beginning of the season creeps up earlier and earlier. Pretty soon, Christmas in July isn't going to sound very far fetched at all.

Many people want to put up their tree, etc. right after Thanksgiving. That means buying the stuff in the next few weeks so they are prepared. Also, those doing large outdoor displays are working on them already, so they can be lit up by Dec 1.

I guess if you're the type that puts up your tree on Dec 20th (or Christmas Eve), then it would seem early. I'm not one for "Christmas creep" as far as commercials, or actual decorations in the malls, etc. But for products being SOLD, it makes sense to have it available right after Halloween.

Reasoning behind it?

It's, by far, the largest shopping season of the year. And nearly every single person celebrates Christmas in one form or another. It's a well-known practice to start your Xmas shopping early or at least keep your eyes peeled for deals. So retailers are more than happy to oblige. We made them this way through our shopping actions.

Christmas stuff was going up here before Halloween was over! If I need Christmas decorations I buy them on clearance after Christmas is over, so it always seems early to me when stores put out stuff this early. This only benefit is Christmas treats like Dove Chocolate Peppermint Bark. I'm going to have to look for some this weekend. YUMMY!!

It is too early, and will remain too early until Thanksgiving. This opinion will change nothing in the world. :)

@inkycatz: I also think retailers need to wait until after Thanksgiving to get al "Christmasy." One holiday at a time, folks...

I actually like that all the decorations are being sold. Every paycheck I go out and buy one or two things-- by the time Christmas comes around, I'll have plenty, for work, and home. Now, the christmas chocolates are a bit ridiculous. And advertizing christmas deals is very premature. But I like being able to look around and see what new ideas are, and plan a few creations of my own.
