FYI: It's not a "new" ability. At all. That's been part of the functionality since well before the site came out of beta.

I like that feature. There are people here whom I respect and I like to be able to look at what they vote for. It's especially handy when I've been away for a few days so I can see worthwhile posts I might otherwise miss.

But I take your point. It's ultimately up to you, of course, what criteria you use to vote. Personally, I try to keep my personal feelings about a poster out of my decision as to whether I vote or not. But, then, there are a couple of users for whom I simply would not vote. But they tend to be people who don't post good deals anyway.

vote-for8vote-against

we have always been able to view people's voting history, as it were, as well as their comment history. I use it sometimes to go back and vote up their comments and make sure I voted on their deals, before they hit popular.

vote-for12vote-against

One of the uses of user history for me is to decide whether or not to tattle. If I see a definite pattern of moronic behavior, or nothing but (as @anotherhiggins put it) snarky comments, it will tip over into tattling on something. It also affects my voting on deals that I'm on the fence for.

In addition, I love user history for finding interesting fun stuff I might not have known about otherwise. If someone posts something I like, and I haven't noticed them before, I'm going to want to see what else they've posted. I believe that was how I first noticed @catbertthegreat, and I KNOW it was how I first noticed @wootiewooterson (I didn't realize she was staff until later).

User history is a good thing(tm).

Transparency keeps 'em honest. I like this for the same reason i prefer publicly accountable voting records for all elected officials. If you're on record, its easy to spot the bad apples, as you seemed to here.

The Deals section is about Deals. I think playing well with others is possibly a factor in Ask The Wooters. Because you are trying to help people by answering their questions.

vote-for6vote-against

@faughtey: I think what the OP meant is that this person has not posted any meaningful comments on the deals side at all, just snarky little comments on nearly every single deal that has been posted this week. I can think of one person who recently fits this description.

vote-for3vote-against

I didn't even know we could do that. Maybe they don't either. They would appear as if they aren't participating if they don't know they can. ;)

@hobbit: Heh, I need more coffee!

vote-for6vote-against

@shrdlu: Wootie's a girl??? I never realized that. I always like finding out there's another girl about the place!

vote-for4vote-against

@lavikinga: I'm starting to think y'all outnumber us! I just recently found out that you're a girl.

@anotherhiggins: It has been fascinating to watch the ladies relax the aggressive males and turn a rant into a discussion. They seem to be extremely helpful, attempting to reach a successful outcome on this site.

vote-for3vote-against

I'm not knocking the transparency. Personally, I like it.
I just wonder if it would be fair of me to make my votes personal, instead of simply voting if a deal is good or not.

Knowing myself, I'll probably make it personal. :))

vote-for10vote-against

I'd like to augment a point shrdlu made about the usefulness of others history - you may find there are some wooters who have the same needs/interests as you for instance a need for sporting equipment. By bookmarking those wooters you can save yourself a bit of time & just check what they added/voted on. It's pretty handy when you only have a a few minutes of "down" time in a day.

I find that tab very useful.

vote-for5vote-against

@anotherhiggins: Not having capital letters can throw off a name. I'm still trying to figure out a few here on deals. My call sign/screen name La Vikinga (Spanish for "The Viking"), is the nickname my father-in-law gave me upon our first meeting. I'm most definitely female.

vote-for8vote-against

@combustiblekitty: Part of me is thinking "Oh good grief! I've voted for some utter crap! Please don't look!"

vote-for8vote-against

@jasmine: Most of us vote for people as well as deals. I may not like something that gets posted as a deal (all that white gold jewelry - need more gold), but @prettywootprincess and @catbertthegreat nearly always get my votes. They are always looking for cool things for us, and a vote is a pretty simple reward for their efforts. Same with @shrdlu and @hobbit and @lavikinga and many others.
As for snarky comments, many of those come from people who frequent woot.com and their community comments are deliberately sarcastic, amusing, silly, snarky, lame, etc. Ask The Wooters tends more to be more considered and thoughtful commentary, with some occasional sidetracking into personal, amusing, sometimes sarcastic, but mostly helpful thoughts.
p.s. always make sure that @shrdlu has had plenty of coffee before you ask anything

vote-for5vote-against

@lavikinga: Yeah. Shouldn't that make her wootiewootersdottir?

vote-for9vote-against

@jasmine: Guess you have to ask yourself what is the order of importance when you vote on a deal? Value of the deal in general? Would YOU use the deal? Could others use the deal? Is the deal poster a real piece of work that you wouldn't help over a cliff? Etcetera. I know there are certain posters I absolutely will not vote on their deals or make comments on them, because I'm a bit childish that way ;)

vote-for5vote-against

@lavikinga: I agree with everything lavikinga just said. I pretty much vote the same way.

vote-for4vote-against

@hobbit: Psst! @Hobbit! I don't know admitting that is such a good idea.

All kidding aside, @Jasmine was open about the How & Why of her voting and I appreciate seeing how others make their choices.
I've been voting willy nilly lately and only on things that catch my eye. Have to admit I've not been the most discerning Wooter. I've also been lax on not doing digging on a LOT of the things I've voted up, nor have I looked more into deals that I know nothing about to see if maybe I SHOULD vote on them rather than ignore (computer hardware, tech head stuff, etc.). And I have been terribly snarky when I probably shouldn't.

vote-for5vote-against

@lavikinga: Thank you for the explanation of your name. I don't think I would have gotten it on my own.

The first time I noticed your name I read it quickly and thought it was "lava king". Definitely didn't sound like a girl's name.

vote-for5vote-against

And some people I gladly do not vote for and just hope they go away, quickly because their inane comments are boring (none of those people are contributing this thread btw)

vote-for5vote-against

@hobbit: You say the nicest things!

vote-for4vote-against

@anotherhiggins: Haha! I thought it was Lava King for a few days too. Makes so much more sense now. What doesn't make as much sense is why would your (@lavikinga) father-in-law, upon first meeting, pick that for you!? Were you singing opera with one of those awesome horn caps?

vote-for2vote-against

Thanks, everyone.
I think I'll do the same as Hobbit in the hope they just go away...

vote-for3vote-against

@lavikinga: I'm sure we've all been snarky at some point. I have, too. It's human nature.
But this guy is always snarky. I couldn't find one real contribution. Just snark snark snark...
Ugh.

vote-for2vote-against

I have started looking at who the poster is to try and stop the posts from the self serving websites. I will only vote for deals from wooters, not company hacks.

vote-for1vote-against

I would suggest that the Original Poster (OP) look at the leaderboard, note which wooters comment on each others comments, deals, and replies to comments, then never vote for thier stuff again. It is laughable.

If you couldn't tell by the comments made by a particular group of wooters on this site, then you have no idea how many women are on here. Just look for the group comments that attack a different viewpoint, especially anything they consider "insensitive".

Yes, this is my "comment".

vote-for3vote-against

@ecriscit: Well, there are lots of techies on here, some really smart people who post great deals, some who go just for amusement, etc. I thought your tablesaw was a good deal, but I am not knowledgeable about them, and I did not vote for it for that reason.
After months of seeing deals and comments from specific wooters, it is fairly natural that some social commentary evolves. See @shrdlu's question re social networking and the resulting comments.
However, if anyone posts a challenge search question, you will see the "regular" wooters (who as a group are very helpful people) leap in with suggestions, finds, comparisons, reviews and recommendations. It is a great site. You make a good point about some group thinking, but it is not hard to find a topic where 50% or more of the responders are in agreement on that particular topic.

vote-for4vote-against

@ecriscit: "I would suggest that the Original Poster (OP) look at the leaderboard, note which wooters comment on each others comments, deals, and replies to comments, then never vote for thier stuff again. It is laughable."

You lost me on this. Please explain.

@geode: My F-I-L is Spanish. I'm almost 5'11" with long blonde hair & blue eyes. Put me in braids, dress me in leather & furs and give me a sword and I'll look like I belong in Valhalla.

vote-for10vote-against

@ecriscit: Are you assuming some only vote for deals because it's done out of some odd cronyism? Isn't it possible the deals are really good? I don't understand how the gender of the poster is germane to your criticism.

I like guns, fast cars, expensive booze, hot & sweaty sex. I like titillation. I like men & think men are getting short shrift these days. I wear furs & leather. And diamonds. I carry a gun. I believe the 2nd Amendment protects the 1st. Short of crying "Fire" in a crowded theater, I believe that everyone is entitled to say what they wish & shouldn't be offended when others disagree. And they will disagree. So what? However, one should think about situational awareness & proceed accordingly. We call it public decorum.
I believe in limited government, the Protestant work ethic & the old proverb about teaching a man to fish. I also believe if you act like a ass, people will treat you accordingly. I'm a female. And MY voting doesn't always reflect who I am.

vote-for5vote-against

@lavikinga: A great answer! Kudos. You forgot chocolate. Also wine, the perfect seashell and a gorgeous, sunny day.

vote-for6vote-against

@lavikinga: Oh geeze do I have to share my political views too so people can see we are all vastly different? But that we all just like woot? How about this.
I am the youngest member of my DAR Chapter and the president of it and I am in my well early 40's - I also think sharing that much info is Too much info about me personally really. I was a border line punk in college and into my 20's and the only reason I sort of mellowed is because I chose a mainstream career. I belive that government needs to stay out of my personal life, off my personal property, and that there should be much much less Federal Government. I also believe we should be doing what we can to protect the planet for our future generations but in a reasonable manner, I get excited when I see companies like Standard Oil saying that they are going to invest in alternative power sources. I hate big business, but I do go to Wal Mart for my generic drugs - they are cheaper. I am a borderline techy I know my limits though

vote-for7vote-against

@lavikinga and @hobbit, your youthful "confessions" are making me feel like an old lady. I like both of your politics; though, @hobbit, I never did quite understand that punk thing. I guess I was a bit too old when it hit the scene to really appreciate it.

I'm quite learning to love Deals.Woot. For years my family has shaken their heads in amazement at my ability to find deals and make a dollar stretch till it screams. Finding a group of folks who have the same talent (sickness?!) is either a. fabulous or b. enabling a very dangerous habit!

I vote for deals based on how interested I am in that particular deal, how original or unique the item is, or if I've purchased like items before and know for certain that the price is a better deal than I got it for. I try hard to vote purely on the deal, and not based on who posted. But sometimes I do.

I also love, love, love promo codes. To me promo codes are a Make-Your-Own-Deal deal!

vote-for1vote-against

You have to remember also that if your seeing that a person has never voted on another persons items, chances are its not cause there rude, heartless, or care only about themselves. Chances are its cause they have never purchased anything directly from woot (not a user submitted deal) and so they do not have the ability to vote on others items.

vote-for5vote-against

@ecriscit: From lavikinga's reply, the intent of your comment is clear to me now. Since you haven't bothered to respond to my confusion in an earlier post, I'll assume she's correct since it makes sense.
You seem to feel there's a "cliqueness" on the board. Since you were kind enough to offer me a suggestion :) let me offer one to you, as well.

This is a community. An internet based community sure, but they all operate the same way.
So my suggestion is that you realize within any community, you get back what you put in.

As much as I'd LOVE to say more, I'll be nice and leave it at that.

vote-for4vote-against

@jasmine: This cliquishness he perceives could be because there are (so far) only a small number of people who help out answering questions. Contributing on BOTH sides of deals is part of the algorithm and THAT'S how some of us have ended up on the leaderboard. The stats will change as more people get involved in all sides of deals.woot.

vote-for5vote-against

@bkindustries: You'd think after hanging out here for a couple of days would be enough of an incentive to wander over to Woot proper and buy something so some one could vote. This weekend's toffee would be a perfect opportunity.

vote-for0vote-against

@lavikinga: I plan on purchasing something so that I can vote, however on the days that I have gotten on and checked out woot, there hasn't been anything of interest to me. That's the only reason that I haven't purchased something. Not every deal woot offers appeals to everyone, and so far only a few deals have to me (but they were too pricey)

But I was thinking about getting the toffee. BUT I had my debit cards canceled this last week (fraud issues) and I don't get my new ones till tomorrow so I am kinda stuck.

vote-for3vote-against

@bkindustries: if you're a drinking person and live in a grape-friendly state, I recommend making a wine purchase from wine.woot.com

vote-for0vote-against

@lavikinga: I actually don't drink at all, not a drop. I figured the best thing for me to purchase would be one of the t-shirts but I am waiting for a good one. If my debit card was working today than I would have purchased the table and chairs for my kids, so hopefully they get another good deal like that soon.
